Can Anyone Tell Me How To Use Seachem Neutral Regulator?

Tank Specifications
  • 4 Gallons
  • Betta Fish
  • Artifical Plants
  • Coarse Gravel
What is need to understand is:
- should I the regulator to the water tank or the fresh 20% water that I will be adding
- if adding to the freshwater, how long should I wait for the conditioner to work and when can I add this water to the tank
- If adding to the tank, how long should I wait to add fish back to the tank?

I am a beginner so any support on this matter would be very helpful.

Thank in advance!

With only 4 gallons its going to be tough. Any reason you need to use that?

Didnt necessarily mean the brand. Most times its better to leave the ph alone vs having it go up and down as you add chemicals and as they wear off. Unless its really low or really high those types of products cause more problems than they solve.

Unfortunately, I have ended up buying this product and as you must be knowing, its a conditioner and pH regulator combined.

Is there a way I can still use in a manner that it's not harmful to my fish, maybe in combination with something or by reducing its quantity to a bare minimum during a water change?

I have the Seachem Neutral Regulator and added it to my bucket(s) when doing water changes, I mixed it in the water before adding it to the tank that my fish were already established in. Most pH products reduce pH slowly over time as to not stress your fish out. My friend gave me some blue tablets that sit in the tank (like a weekend feed block) and did the trick fine - steady decrease, fish were happy.

What is your pH currently and what are you trying to reduce/maintain?

I don't have any experience with that product so hopefully someone that used it will chime in.

HI diddakoi,

Thanks for your message. My pH kit hasn't arrived yet, hence I don't the know the pH of my tank as of now. But having said that, I am using Seachem Neutral regulator more as a conditioner than a pH regulator right now as it can do both.

No problem David, thanks for your support thus far.

I've been told Seachem Prime is great to help cycle your tank and condition it - I have Seachem Safe which is the powder version. Neutral Regulator may not help your nitrites and nitrates so you may need something else. Are you using any other products?

I can't help you with the regulator product but am I reading this right? Are you removing your fish when doing a partial water change? I just wanted to let you know that is totally unnecessary and is actually a lot more stressful on your fish to remove him than it is to just leave him in there during the water change.

I tried Neutral Regulator a little over a month ago and it did nothing for me. When first starting my tank build (I'm new) I wanted to get an idea 7.0 pH, going down from 7.4. No matter how much I used, I could not get Neutral Regulator to make my pH move at all. I did the following test...

I got 1 gallon of tap water.
I added 2.0mL of Liquid Neutral Regulator, a standard dosage for 1 gal of water, mixed the water.
Tested again, the pH didn't move.
I added 4.0mL of Liquid Neutral Regulator, so this would be 3x the normal dosage in total, mixed the water.
Tested again, the pH didn't move.
I added 6.0mL of Liquid Neutral Regulator, so this would be 6x the normal dosage in total, mixed the water.
Tested again, the pH didn't move.

So it sounds as if my KH is too high for Neutral Regulator to win the battle in lowering pH which leads me to needing to use other products (Discus Buffer for instance) as well as Neutral Regulator if I really wanted to hit 7.0.

I didn't feel that was worth it, too hard to manage going forward so I'm just rolling with a steady 7.4.

Here's my post you can read more on.
