Can a terrarium be an aquarium?

Hello,

I have found a free terrarium someone was giving away. It is pretty dirty but I will clean it and does not have any LED lights but I can add some. It seems to be 30-55 gallons and I was wondering...could I upgrade my platyfish to this. It does not seem cracked but I can test it for leaks. I hope I can use it as an aquarium. What do you think?

Thank you,

Yes, if it holds water.
But still, it may hold water now but it may just crack in the middle of the night

Yes, if it holds water.
Alright I will test it with holding water overnight

If you have a safe place to set it up and fill it with water, I would leave for at least a couple of days. That's how I test my new tanks whether brand new or used.

Thank you, that's exactly what I'll do!

I bought a terrarium from a reptile store a while back and after a long time I decided to see if I can make a fish tank out of it. I put water in it and the water began to slowly leak out of the seams on the bottom of the terrarium. I guess it might depend on the brand and what kind of terrarium you get but when you put water in in put it in a place that won't take water damage just in case.

Thank you so much for your help. If there are leaks I'll fix them somehow.

You need to be careful. The glass in the terarrium may be too thin, since a terrariaum is not designed to hold water. But even it the glass is thick enough, you defitly want to check for leaks, I think if I owned an aquaruim manufacturing factory, all of the tanks that failed the leak test would be sold as terrariums.

It also depends if it was an aquarium that they were using as a terrarium or was just a terrarium the whole time.

I know our Tortoise’s terrarium didn’t even have silicone on all the sides, but so long as it is well siliconed together it should hold up fine.

Terrariums are not really made to hold water thinner glass and the seems and silicone may not be sufficient
