Can a lid be used with the Hagen lighting system?

I've always had plastic hoods on my fish tanks. I recently have decided to upgrade my tank equipment and purchased a Hagen T5 HO lighting system. It's not possible for me to suspend it from the ceiling so I'm currently using the black plastic holders that hold it above the tank. My problem is that I also purchased a standard glass canopy but it won't fit with the light holders. Is there are special type of canopy that I can buy that will work with that system or can I go lid-free? My tank has glo-fish, amano and red cherry shrimp, and panda cories. I plan to add a small school of neons in a few weeks.

you def need to have a glass top. those lights aren't meant to be perched over open water...if it were to fall in....ooooh, big trouble.. since you can't hang from the ceiling, you need to get a versa top. this is a 20g? a top for that is not expensive. sites like foster and smith aquatics have them

actually, wait....I just read your post again. you have a glass top. but why can't you get the lights to fit with it? you're supposed to put the top on, then rest the light on top....with the little plastic legs.

When the glass top is on there's no room on the side for the lip of the brace to hold (does that make sense)? It's almost like I need a lid with plastic on the side that I can cut a rectangle from so that the brackets will fit snugly.

You've got the fixture that has brackets, not legs. Its meant for an open top, that's what it's designed for. Dose it have an on/off switch? Ive got two Hagen Glo fixtures that have brackets and adjustable for length which is cool.

Is this your fixture? It's what I have.

I thought so. . Unless you can make a DIY lid you'll have to go open top.

It's a great light except they don't have an on/off switch. At least they include a timer.
