Calcium/mineral Buildup?

I just did a weekly pwc and while pouring the new water back in over the top of a decoration, a bunch of white flakes came off of the decoration and started floating around the tank. They're mostly now stuck to the prefilter foam covering the intake. Could this be calcium or mineral buildup? Is it something I should be trying to get rid of or is it fish friendly?

    Any photos of it?
How long was the tank set up?
What is the decoration that had the white flakes?

No photos. I was trying to keep track of my son while looking after the tank so I didn't really think to take any.

The decoration is a treasure chest bubbler, which is not used for, uh, bubbling. The white flakes came off of a pink anemone thing on top of it.

The tank has been set up for about 3 months.

Check the decoration to make sure no paint is missing. If there is, remove the decoration. If not, it is probably just some type of mineral/calcium buildup and is harmless.

No paint missing. There's nothing white on it so I wasn't worried that it was part of the decoration.
