Buying Plants From Petsmart?

I don't have any fish stores near me and if ordered inline but that won't get to me until monday to nextMonday.

I don't mind basic plants. So I just want to know you're opinions on buying plants from petsmart.

Thanks

Mine only sells the ones in the tube. Be aware that some of them aren't true aquatic plants though!
If you have a PetCo near you, they sell better plants IMO!

Just be prepared to have a lot of bladder snails. Lots of chain store’s plants tend to be riddled with bladder snails eggs so when you get them home try to scrap the leaves to get most of the eggs off of it. That being said be picky about the plants you choose if it has dying leaves: no, holes in the leaves: no, yellow leaves:no. That being said if they all show a deficient choose the one with the least progression.

Yes, you must be careful not to purchase un-aqautic plants as petstores can be decietful in that regard. I'd just do a bleach dip of any you get to be safe.

I got a nice anubias from one of the tubes and it has tripled in size. Be sure to rinse it first!

I decided that if I went there I would do a bleach dip. Do they sell java moss? I couldn't find it on there site

Edit: also thanks for the quick response every one

Don’t believe Petsmart’s typically sell moss. If they did it’d be in their tanks and id be apprehensive to do that, even with a bleach dip.

No problem, glad I could be of some helps. Pet stores certainly aren’t the best places to purchase fish from.

Crypt WendttI is my favorite. It melts some but it’s a great plant! Personally I dislike regular java fern but the trident version or narrow leaf are good. I got some trident java fern in a tube at petsmart.

Nothing really wrong the the plants in the tube, read the label it says if it's for an aquarium or terrarium. The tube plants shouldn't have any snails, but they just end up food for my assassin snails.

so I was at petsmart today and i've done a lot of looking at their stock before... i'm sure all petsmarts are different, but none of mine have a tank full of plants like petco does. I have seen one measly 5 gallon where they might throw a couple plants in, though.

in my experience, petco has slightly cheaper prices, but petsmart has more selection. all of their tubed, packaged, tank and cup plants come from . their website has a list of everything they carry. of course, corporate decides which plants to stock in store. they are all snail-free. most of these plants are grown emersed rather that submersed, and some are tissue-cultured, so there can be some melting/die back issues once you plant them.

regarding fully aquatic plants only, you can typically find different variations of java fern (tropica, narrow leaf, windelov), anubias (assorted such as barteri, nana, frazeri), amazon swords, water wisteria (emersed, will look totally different once submersed), rosette swords, banana plants, and marimo moss balls. in the little packs they carry cardinal plants, alternanthera reineckiI cardinalis, bacopa carolinia and monnieri, dwarf hairgrass, staurogyne repens, and a variety of crypts -- depends on the petsmart though. the only thing that I think is really hardy from there is the bacopa. I just looked at their website though and there are lots of others that I missed that I see in stock sometimes, but you get the general idea.

so yeah. uhh. java ferns and anubias are probably the hardiest, but they are slow growers. they also cannot be buried in your substrate. water wisteria is pretty easy and should take off once it's converted to its submersed state. swords are very easy but can get huge (rosette swords won't, and I think they look nice).

I got my Marimo from petsmart he seems to be doing great!
I haven’t had to do anything special other than take him out and roll him and rinse with cold water (was told to do this by a friend) so I’d say they’re hardy but at the same time I had someone tell me they got one and it died right away so it could be different do everyone
