Howdy!

I'm looking do get a few snails to help aerate my substrate. I don't want MTS - I have them in some of my tanks and am just looking for something else.

Right now I am debating between rabbit and chopstick snails. Does anyone own both of these and can give their opinions? It's all fine and dandy to read articles but experiences make the difference.

Also my research said that the black devil snail will eat plants, but the cappuccino spike snail will not. This is confusing because they are the same species (faunus ater) with 2 color variations. Could someone straighten me out on this?

Any other great burrowing snails I've forgotten to mention?

Thanks!

I've also heard/seen and been told chopstick and spike are the same thing too? It also doesn't make sense that they say cappuccino won't eat plants.

My devils only eat grass.. Lol
So no sag, no val or small ferns like that in my halloween tank.
They leave the roots... Just eat all the grass blades.
They haven't touched bacopa, wisteria, tiger lily, ludwigia or stem plants of the like. But they will eat any decomposing leaves on the ground.
I do love my spike snails. Their short faces are so cute, and the way they yank their shell forward while crawling along.

Thanks for your reply!
Looking at the scientific names, spike snails are faunus ater and chopstick snails are stenomelania torulosa? So 2 different species.
OOOHHH no nooo NOOOO! don't you dare eat my plants you devil snail! Haha thanks for the info, I read that they might eat java ferns but leave other plants alone. But if you say they also eat grass, they are staying out of my tanks!! (pitty, I loved the look at them :/ )
I'm leaning towards rabbit snails right now. They seem least picky and most active.

Go with what works. More mts . They do a great job aerating and cleaning up the substrate.
Assassins also get into the substrate. But they don’t eat algae.

Thanks But like I said, I want to do something other than MTS. And I would like to keep other snails in the tank as well, so assassins are out.
