Bullies and glass surfing part 2

Been doing some research re. the 5 banded barbs. I can see why you like them, they are similar to the tigers you have. One of my top priorities in choosing fish for a community tank is I want the tank to be peaceful. They say they are not as nippy as the Tigers but can still be nippy if not in large enough numbers. Also at least a 30 gallon tank is recommended for them.

Edit. Wasn't done... I think you would be better off and your corys too and your dad with cardinals or rasboras. You might want to check the temp. requirements of your Cory cats, a few need cooler water.

Continue... If yours like cooler water you could choose the neons that also Like cooler water.

You are young and later when you can have a larger tank to accommodate the tiger barbs and whatever else would be appropriate then you can really enjoy them and not be fretting and worried. Good luck.

For the neons and the cardinals, they both live at the same height. I'm not sure about five banded barbs. Maybe you can research or someone else more knowledgable will stumble upon here. If you like the shape, color, and just generally the looks of tiger barbs, go for five banded barbs, as I has suggested.

I'm torn between neons, threadfins, harlequins, and FBB. I don't know what to do

Neons temp should be at 78 max! Lower it down to 74-76.

What would you do? (Between the four I said)

Just choose which fish you think will look the nicest and co-exist the most peacefully with all your other fish.

I agree

I would do 10-12 neon tetra's( after lowering the temp) and keep the albino Cory. You have nice plants, so I think neons would look and fit the best

That's what my aunt said. After asking all my family, it's between neons an the rainbows. Thanks!

Nice to see you finally decide. When are you going to rehome the barbs? Also, take care with the neons. They aren't as hardy as they were.

Are cardinals better? I'll be rehoming them in less than a week

Harlequins are pretty awesome. Really active and fun to watch. I have 8 myself

Really depends of what you want. I think cardinals are a bit more hardy. They're also bigger.

WAIT. I found a new fish I'm IN LOVE with. Dwarf neon rainbow fish

Have you proposed yet? Lol. All jokes aside, I'm not sure dwarf rainbow fish are a good fish. They do best in groups of ten, and I don't think that's bet for a 20 gallon. Add the cories and the gourami snd it would be overstocked. Your choice though, as it wouldn't be overstocked by much. You might also want to monitor the cost. 10 dwarf rainbow fish might cost ALOT of money.

I know a minimum school is 6. I must sound like an awful person, the type of people I always hate seeing, but I think I want to do 6 of them. You're right. It's a lot of money. My LFS sells for 10 each, so it'll be 60 bucks.

Blake, isn't it better to start with cheaper / easier fish to start with.
After gaining some experience (and probably a bigger tank) I'd get some more expensive / less easy to keep fishspecies.

I agree with double dutch. If you lost your dwarf rainbowfish, it would be a lot of money down the drain.

Yeah I'm looking at it, and the only problem I see is that my ph is very high, but that can be solved with slow acclimation. I have the planted aquarium, sand substrate, and high powered filter they like. Te websites say 6 is okay but 10 is preferred.

Final say?

I, personally, think that you might want to get them if you are willing to spend the money and care for them well. 60 dollars is a lot of money. It is a risk though, if one of your rainbow fish die, that's 10 dollars down the drain. That's a school of neon tetras.

I don't think the tank is big enough for them, personally. They're bigger than tiger barbs. The threadfins would be a better choice for your tank.
Though I love both. I have six turquoise rainbows in my 85 as well as 15 Harlequin Rasbora. In your tank, I'd do the Rasbora. They're beyond gorgeous when fed well and they actually school together beautifully.

Really? I'm no expert on rainbow fish, but aren't dwarf rainbowfish supposed to be small? Hence the name dwarf? But like I said, I'm no expert so correct me if I'm wrong.

I got it at petsmart. Grrreat is the brand. 30 dollars, I think.

I don't know about this fish, but that's A conmon mistake. Fishsize doesn't tell a lot about the needed tanksize..

"Small enough" doesn't count.

That's true, but every website I saw, including seriously fish, said 15-20 gallons, and I have a 20 long

Correct. And animal-world says

"Dwarf Rainbowfish do not require a lot of extra care, but they are not recommended for beginners or new tanks as they don’t handle stress very well."

Besides of that they are wildcaught fish "having a manual". Such a fish in an so far unbalanced tank is asking for issues.

That's exact why I made my earlier remarks and did advise to start with some easier fish.

But I'll rest my case now !! Please let us know how it works out.

Huh, now that you say that, I think you should remove the tiger barbs, leave your tank for a month or two, and then let fill your tank with the rainbowfish. That way, they'll be added to an established tank.

If the tank is already cycled with stable parameters I wouldn't do that, you'll lose the bacteria that were dealing with the waste from the Tiger Barbs and could send the tank into a minI cycle. If this was a fish in cycle and the tank isn't yet stable just ignore me lol.

The tank is cycled. I have to do a "domino switch". I get the rainbows, take out the barbs, acclimate the rainbows, an return the barbs all at the same time.

I don't think you should do the rainbows either. Look for fish that stay under 2 inches.

Whoops. Guess I messed up pretty badly there.
