Or rehome the cories and possibly the DG and just keep the barbs.

I agree with Daniel. Rehome the Tigers. If they aren't kept in the right way (too small tank / too small scholl) they will stay pain in the asses towards all kind of species.
Glasssurfing of Corys can last for 2 weeks (even without Tigers). Albinos are famous for it.

Oh so should I wait the two weeks and theeeen see about rehoming?

To me the tank is to small for a (decent enough) school of Tigers.

Why would you wait two weeks? To see if it gets any better? If some of the corys are on the ground, are the tiger barbs a bit more peaceful? Or are the corys just too exhausted to continue?

Read my lips : glasssurfing has not to do with the nipping Tigers.
Tigers in a small tank and shoal get bored very soon and they'll nip at anything (especially if that't a bit different than themselves).

I think the corys try to go down when the tigers aren't looking like lights off and feeding time

It's really sad. Just hoping and praying here.

I don't think it'll get better. You need to rehome some fish, and the TBs are a good choice. You can replace them with a much more peaceful schooler.

Harlequins would be a better choice for instance.

I love my tbarbs they're just annoying. Idk what to do. In better news, my snail is moving, but I'm gonna give it a week or two about the corys.

Get a 29 gal. From a 20 long it's an easy upgrade. If your dad is concerned over this tank, he may agree.

I must sound so, so stupid. But still, that not an option, I already asked. I have really stubborn parents if you couldn't tell.

That's a good choice! I second your non loving fish parents. Like I have said in the other thread, you need to have at least 15 tiger barbs minimum!! Your tank is to small to account that. I would rehome the tiger barbs or get rid of the cories. I would do tiger barbs and maybe get 8+ gold barbs.

I said tiger barbs or the cories.
Edit: you can put shrimp down their but they will be eaten lol

I know what you said, I guess I phrased it differently. I meant that if I had to choose between the cories or tiger barbs being rehomed, I would choose the barbs, no hesitation.

Yes. If I did harlequin rasboras, how many could I do in my 20 long?

Do you know if petsmart exchanges fish? Also, if I got a different set of barbs, would they set new territory and leave the corys alone?

Edit: also, if I move that main centerpiece up a few inches, so that there are a few inches behind it as well, would that cause them to establish new territory?

What species of barb did you want?

Petsmart will take fish back if it has been less than two weeks.

I don't think moving the centerpiece a few inches will help much.

Oh I meant 8 different tiger barbs. It's definitely been two weeks since I bought the original 6. Is there any way to return or even exchange? How many CPDs could I put if I wanted them? They're tiny?

In my experience, Petsmart only takes fish that died before 2 weeks. And about exchanging the barbs, it won't work unless you get an extra 10 or so.

Oh ok . Maybe they'll feel pity since they're wreaking havoc. Idek what fish to replace them with, I love the colors, size, and shape.

You can add in CPDs after you rehome the barbs. 10-20 will work. They're small.

Daniel W
  • #69
Maybe try replacing them with a tight schooling fish. If you want a more colorful species, maybe some other barb? I don't know much about the more colorful species.

Actually, there is a pretty rare but very similar fish called the five banded barb. Looks exactly like a tiger barb! It isn't aggressive either and I think can live in a 20 gallon long tank comfortably. Has to be kept in schools of at the very least, 5 barbs. The more the merrier.

You can find them at liveaquaria.

CPDs are very, very expensive. I just don't like the five band barb but good suggestion.mits not the same

Daniel W
  • #71
Then I don't know what to do now. There are only two paths to go that will allow you to keep the barbs. 1. Is to rehome the cories and the other is to upgrade to a larger tank and add a bunch of barbs. Number one is the easier path but might not be the best. Its not a gurantee that the barbs will not nip the dwarf gourami you got there.

There are many other species besides CPDs that will work...

I know how you feel. My parents are the same and think I am Crazy, and so does everybody else I know. You know what I am saying? Like you think it's cool and everybody else is just like "what's the point, fish only live a few weeks anyways." I am guessing you have already been told by your parents, " why do you need such a big tank." Sorry for all the ranting

I'm the exact same! Whenever I talk about fish in front of my family, they groan and threaten me to stop. Whenever I talk about fish in front of my friends, they say I'm obsessed with fish. And whenever I take good care of my fish, my family is like, why are you taking such good care of them. They're just fish. But let's not misdirect the topic.

Yep. We should make another thread. ( I will do the @ thing) but let's all focus on the reason this thread was started.

I think things might have been different if you had introduced your corrys to the tank first, and then started adding the barbs. Although it's not uncommon for tiger barbs to pick on other fish, like tetras, it's what they do. I can't say for sure if this would work, but try setting up a divider between them and let the corrys get used to the tank for a few weeks and then remove the divider, by then, they should be more used to the tank as their new home and stick to the bottom, your tank looks like it has enough hiding spots for the fish lose sight f each other in there.

Sorry but I don't really get the discussion. Not being offensive or rude, but :

A 20 G is too small for Tigers cause of several reasons and will show aggression for the same reasons.

They need space and they need a large school to not get bored. If one of both isn't fulfilled, this is what you get.

One could wait till easter and christmass will be on the same day, but that will never be different.

Rehome the Tigers and get another species that don't have these needs !!

Good for you, it must not have been an easy decision. I would suggest you look on uTube at the fish on your list, will give you an idea what they would look like in your tank.

I've had harlequin rasboras and they are hardy, pretty and fun to watch. Also had neons, I actually prefer cardinals, but that's just my preference. Either are beautiful. The thread fin rainbows look nice on uTube but someone else can tell you more about them and the other fish on the list.

You will enjoy having a calm tank, enjoy!

Yeah I was just looking on YouTube, the micro rasboras are not my thing, too small. Now, if I was looking for more of a top or middle dweller, what would be better: cardinals, five banded barb, or harlequin rasboras?
