Building Custom Tank, Glass Questions

I'm building a custom tank to do cherry shrimp in. It will have the same footprint as a 10 gallon (10" x 20"), but I am doing it with shorter sides. Tank will be 7-1/2" deep instead of 12" deep. Capacity will be approximately 6.3 gallons.

The Aqueon 10 gallon tank i have used 3/32" thick, non tempered glass.

For my custom "6.3 gallon" tank, I was going to use 1/8" thick glass.

I've read about tempered vs non tempered, and I dont think I will need tempered due to my size and the fact that I'm going slightly thicker on the glass.

Also, I bought a pair of black plastic rims, not sure if I am going to use them or not. I know it will make it easier to do a lid, but I may go lid-less and do some wood sticking up out of the middle.

Any thoughts or advice would be very welcome.

Glass width seems good to me and lid less is the way to go, you dont have to worry about shrimp jumping.

Also on a side note once your colony is established with multiple generations you could add a dario dario if you wanted. I loved watching mine hunt down baby shrimp.

A lid is usually a good idea to unwanted things from getting in.

i like the look but my house is very dry in winter and the hard water leaves too much of a watermark.

I actually disagree with this. Shrimp are escape artists and a tight lid is A MUST. Shrimp don't jump but they crawl.

Ive never had a shrimp escape from my tanks and theyre all open top. I also dont know anyone who has had shrimp escape as they can not climb up glass.

I have heard many stories of shrimp escaping. Besides, lids help meet heat and humidity in, prevent debris from falling in the tank, and many other things.

Ive always had open top tanks without any troubles although i do use fly screen draped over the light to stop fish from jumping. Keeping heat in is not always a good thing and its easier to heat up your tank then it is to cool it down.
