Bubbles !

My male Betta Ceto has started making bubbles underneath a leaf - is this a nest ? He's all alone bless him so if so I think he has high hopes

 

Sounds like it. Congratulations, that's a sign that your betta loves his tank and thinks it would be a good place to start a family.

I was tempted sooooo much to go get some girls for him. Our local LFS has 4 and they said how easy it is but when you read online its erm not that easy. You need lots of tanks its seems and what do you do with all the babies?

I think he'll have to go without a girlfriend. Poor boy.

Yeah its not an easy process. Its very risky and expensive

 

Actually in my limited experience it's not breeding the bettas that's the hard part. I'd say the main issue with breeding bettas is just the price. Not only do you have all the food for conditioning the parents but then there's also the cultures of microworms, vinegar eels, etc. for the fry. Then all the smaller tanks for the males when they get older and larger ones for the females.

Second big problem: it's time consuming. You really need to be available pretty much ever day for several weeks.

Not something to be undertaken lightly.

 

I worry over the babies mostly. Apparently its easy to end up with 300 +. No definitely won't bother.

 

Depends on the fish. I only ended up with about ten for my first spawn as both were beginners and didn't quite get the embrace right. More experienced fish will usually mean more babies... And you're right, sometimes I've heard up to 500. If just half of those are males then you need 250 tanks minimum.
