Breeding Platies

Its honestly really hard to tell until you see some grown fry. Might as well mix and match until you find your favorite (if the fish are 'compatible' at all).. IMO
hI myfishfillet,
compatible in which way?

If they want to mate with each other or not. They most likely will but some times fish just won't mate for unknown reasons.

ok got it. in your opinion, is it better to mate same color platies or two different colors platies?

I think it would be fun to see what color morphs come from different color platys! but if you are wanting predictable then the same color would be best

Platys store sperm for up to 6 months so you will have to keep the female separate for quite a while if you want any control on the genetics of the offspring.

They’re both very prolific. Keep one male for every two to three females and it will happen. You’ll need to separate the female before she gives birth or the fry will be eaten.

With Platies, Mollies and most other livebearers the trick is to have males and females in the same tank and they will breed. LOL. You really don't have to do anything else to get them to breed. You should have 2 or 3 females for each male to keep down aggression to keep the males form harassing the females too much.

Shoot...Tony M just beat me to it. LOL

Lol, sit back and watch? If you don't want to be overrun with them then keep the parents in there to thin out the fry. Survival of the fittest...

Beautiful angel Wade!
Oh my gosh, I glanced real quick when scrolling down, I don't have my glasses on, the picture is dark and was only half paying attention, I completely and honestly thought it was a chocolate lab with its head cocked to the side and ears perks forward. The dark space to the left and behind I thought was the body.

trust me, after a while you'll have or fry then you can count

Not much to it. You just put a few females and a few males together, and then just put in some hiding places for the fry to hide in (such as a hornwort plant). Then just wait. Separating the females before giving birth can cause the female some stress and may have the female give birth prematurely or not give birth at all from the stress.

Beautiful angel Wade!
Thanks. I've had him for about four years and he is the most gentle Angel I have ever seen. He is almost five inches long and has never bothered anyone in the tank. I recently had to rehome a two inch swordtail because it kept picking on the Angel and he wouldn't fight back.

Just to clarify, are you saying you’re trying to breed Platies with Mollies, or are you just wanting to breed both species? Because they can’t cross breed.

I would like any suggestions or opinions in the following matter. I want to separate 1 male and 2 female mickey mouse platies from my 65 gallon so they can mate. I would then like to leave the pregnant female to give birth in that separate tank. I would also use that tank to grow out the fry and isolate them from the mother. But, my question is what size tank would be adequate for this a aqueon 5.5 or 10 gallon tank. Right now there is a dollar per gallon sale at Petco. Any help is appreciated thanks.

5 or 10 g would be fine for newborn fry, but not as they get bigger. There's a reason the 40 gallon are often called breeder tanks. If you have a larger tank set up later, then you can put then in the smaller tanks , otherwise take advantage of the sale and get a 40g, or at least a 20 gallon long.

Platies and other livebearer's are easy to breed, if there's a male and a female in the same tank the female is probably already pregnant. As far as the fry goes, if you try to save them all you will soon be over run by the fry. Livebearer's can drop batches of fry every few weeks. If you do want some survivors leave the mature fish in the main tank and have some good plant growth that provides cover for the fry. You will end up with some lose of the fry through being eaten, just like what happens in nature. But you should have a few survivors without being overrun after a couple of months.

Thanks but I don't have space for a 20 or 40 forgot to mention that but appreciate your input.

The problem I'm having is that I have larger mollies that are eating the fry. I bought the livebearer grass but they don't hide in there. So, I need a separate tank so that the mom can drop the fry. Thanks for the suggestion.

You can even use a 20 gallon plastic tote or tub as a grow out tank, just put in filter and heater as usual. Or multiple 10 g
