hI myfishfillet,Its honestly really hard to tell until you see some grown fry. Might as well mix and match until you find your favorite (if the fish are 'compatible' at all).. IMO
compatible in which way?

Oh my gosh, I glanced real quick when scrolling down, I don't have my glasses on, the picture is dark and was only half paying attention, I completely and honestly thought it was a chocolate lab with its head cocked to the side and ears perks forward. The dark space to the left and behind I thought was the body.Beautiful angel Wade!
Thanks. I've had him for about four years and he is the most gentle Angel I have ever seen. He is almost five inches long and has never bothered anyone in the tank. I recently had to rehome a two inch swordtail because it kept picking on the Angel and he wouldn't fight back.Beautiful angel Wade!
Thanks but I don't have space for a 20 or 40 forgot to mention that but appreciate your input.5 or 10 g would be fine for newborn fry, but not as they get bigger. There's a reason the 40 gallon are often called breeder tanks. If you have a larger tank set up later, then you can put then in the smaller tanks , otherwise take advantage of the sale and get a 40g, or at least a 20 gallon long.
The problem I'm having is that I have larger mollies that are eating the fry. I bought the livebearer grass but they don't hide in there. So, I need a separate tank so that the mom can drop the fry. Thanks for the suggestion.Platies and other livebearer's are easy to breed, if there's a male and a female in the same tank the female is probably already pregnant. As far as the fry goes, if you try to save them all you will soon be over run by the fry. Livebearer's can drop batches of fry every few weeks. If you do want some survivors leave the mature fish in the main tank and have some good plant growth that provides cover for the fry. You will end up with some lose of the fry through being eaten, just like what happens in nature. But you should have a few survivors without being overrun after a couple of months.
