'fraid not guys! false alarm. no idea what they were, but suspect they arrived with the live daphnia. only source of mystery critters I can think of. but have 3 guppy fry, so they'll give me practice. if I can keep them alive and well, I'll feel more confident when if/when I do get galaxy babies. they still have no libido!! there's no action at all that i've seen anyway :. they just hide in the plants :!

thanks brianna! fingers crossed...I keep checking, but nowt yet! the java moss is growing fast though so that's good so any fry should remain unharmed although i'm yet to read anything that says fry have been eaten by fellow tankmates....I won't risk it thougH! waited too long for these babies to take any risks!!

i've rearranged their tank for them. removed the castle and ornaments, the java moss is quite big now. so put that in a corner and got some more plants coming this week to go in there. they've been circling each other which is meant to mean courting, but still no fry yet. still not sure if I have 10 still as they hide so much! I see them a bit more now i've moved the big ornaments out. they can't hide quite so well in the plants, but do hide behind the java moss. the most i've managed to count is 9, so there's still at least one girl and one boy which is all that's required to get fry. the temp is at 24C which is what's recommended. I just don't what else I can do for them!!! got more guppy fry today so at least i'm getting practiced in rearing fry! just not the type I really really want (dont get me wrong...I do want guppy fry, but wouldnt be so bothered if I didnt get any. galaxy fry I really really want!!). keep sending those positive vibes!! I keep checking the tank and hoping to see at least 1 fry to catch! I'll be straight onto fishlore if there's any news!!

best of luck with the ongoing effort Tan! I think they still need some mood music - maybe play them "Let's Make Love" by Faith Hill & TI'm McGraw.

Glad to hear you have at least your long-awaited guppy fry! Sure you'll be having loads! I just got platy fry today as well. They are adorable little things, all eyes they are. So far we are at 10, but momma has still got more comin'. I'm sure plenty of the ones she had last night have gotten eaten.

congrats!!! it is exciting having fry! I think there's more to come. had 17 yesterday, 11 today. could be more as I think i've forgotten to write some down! trying to keep track, but I get that excited when I see fry that I forget! they are impossible to count in the frytank as they dart about all over the place! my 2 week old ones seem massive now though compared to the newbies! a few have disappeared which were hiding at the bottom of the main tank, so prob lunch or hiding really well. I can't catch them if they're at teh bottom, just the ones that go the floating plants. good luck with yours! livebearers are such fun! are you keeping all/any of fry or trading them, selling them?

They are a challenge to catch on the bottom.
you're not kidding! I can't get the net down there properly cos of the plants and the log etc. I tried and ended up netting 2 adult guppies and the fry darted off somewhere!

HI Tan, How are the galaxies/Celestial Pearl Danio?
Dug this up for you while browsing a forum, please note that the temperature is 2*C lower than what your tank is at. I am not sure if that will have any effect on the breeding.

"they breed easily. they lay eggs in java moss male chase female (they males might chase each other to show off etc) my temp is at 22c ph I have no idea as I don't test however since setting it up I have never changed water except from filing it up from evaporation (about 5%to 10% max every other week)"

But then also I found this:
"Mine are happily breeding at pH of 7.6, temp of 23-24C, and the water is quite hard."

So not sure of the temp. But I also found this, which leads me to believe it would not hurt to lower your temp of the tank.
"I've seen a lot of discussion about breeding this fish with various methods and water parameters offered. Having bred it myself, and now producing F2 fry, I am of the opinion that it isn't fussy. There may well be ways to produce larger numbers of fry but most people should at least be able to produce a handful by following the natural method and avoiding extremes. It does appear to do better in slightly cooler water though - I don't use a heater so my tank is around 20 - 22C"

lol! I do go on that forum once in while. not much happens on there though! too few members so the posts are old and not many get added! not as exciting as fishlore!!
my temp was 25, I lowered it to 24, but am tempted to lower it to 22 (thus would be 22 over night, but when sunny the room gets really hot so the tank ups a degree) so would be 22-23. I did try to lower it last week (I turned the dial, but temp no dif), so will try again later when I do my water change... it may be on the lowest setting already? will check later. i'm doing 10% every week as there's only 10 fish in 28 gal so due to being so understocked and so little waste it doesn't seem to warrant any more than that! I don't agree with no water changes though or there's little fresh input of minerals for plants and the chemistry gets affected by inly pure H2O leaving tank through evaporation: see this...
thanks for passing the info on though brianna, much appreciated.....they still aren't breeding and I have no idea why. 10 fish, at least 2 must fancy each other!!! they have loads of plants, loads of java moss, live food 6 days out of 7. what more do they want?! kama sutra?!

Not much more you can do for them I guess, except dI'm lights and romantic music! Just wait it out, I'm sure you will have fry sometime. My platy fry are doing well, they are just over 2 weeks now. Definatly all gold twinbars. Does anyone know at what time can I tell their sex?

It will be months until you can sex them I think. ours are 3 months old and either the 3 survivors of the 1st batch (of which we only found 8 since we weren't expecting them and I suspect most were eaten) are all female or we can't tell yet on them.

tan - we took some video of our mahachaI flirting today. when I get a chance to post it, play it for your galaxies.. maybe the girls need the guys to do some flirting to get in the mood.

I think its 6 weeks. I guess it depends how still they are to get a good look and how good your sight is! mine had a gravid spot when about 2 wks old which is slightly alarming!! lowered the temp on their heater last night and its still reading 24 on the thermometer! how many fry have you got? my guppies have gone mad.....i've over 50 fry now! they're growing fast so about 20 are in the main tank now and will be sold soon :'(

I never make sense. LOL.. so what's the status of the galaxies? did they get moved to the other tank in a quiet location with a sponge filter & air stone?

no, i've been so busy this week i've only just managed to keep up with bbs hatching etc! car hunting and socialising! when I get the time machine that enables youto accomplish so much in so little time...!!the airstone is out and now in the 45 gal. they have floating plants now which i've borrowed from the guppy tank as the fry in there are very clever and don't need it! and lights are off more than before to keep algae down. and more tall plants in front of the filter, so the current is much lower now.

yea, I figured you've been busy.. have missed talking with you - now poor Gwen has to put up with me all by herself. Best of luck with the car hunting and the galaxies.

well......the poor galaxies have had to move tank :'(. their tank has sprung a leak, so have put the galaxies in the 15gal. there's only 12 of them left and there should be 14. taken all the plants out so it is bare now. def only 12 unless we miscounted them when transfering. anyway, they seem to be enjoying their new residence and I love it as I can actually see them now! before they were always hiding and rarely saw them. they can't hide so well in a small tank. so I reckon I'll leave them in there. also wondering if the change of scenary may trigger spawning. will keep you posted! btw, i've put their java moss in there too.

it's too bad about the tank springing a leak.. I wonder if it has to do with all the flooding there? maybe the fish aliens are going to try breeding that galaxy pair?
