Breeder Box For Guppies

Hi! I've bought a plastic breeder box (with tiny holes for circulation) for my guppies. I kinda now think that it might be actually too small 7x15 cm.

I've put a pregnant one in it, just for a test, and it seems kind of stressed. I also think I might have bought a too small one.

Has anyone had experiences with these breeder boxes?

These boxes are only made to hold the females while they're giving birth. And while they're giving birth, it's okay to leave them in there. Once your girl/girls are done, you should move them back into the main tank. And only put them in when they begin to give birth.

What are you trying to accomplish by putting her in the breeder box?
Just trying to save as many babies as possible?

My guppies breed all the time in my planted community tank and there are tons of fry.

The problem I had when I first started keeping guppies was figuring out when the females were actually ready to give birth.

I would move them to a separate tank because I thought they were ready to pop and they wouldn't give birth for more than a week.

Meh the good news is, if she doesn't get put in the breeder box in time, there's always 5 weeks from now when she'll give birth again.

Well yes of course, but the problem is assessment of when she is actually going to give birth. Sometimes its 10 days after I actually thought it would happen, and I don't want her to be in there for 10 days - practically impossible

Yes, sometimes I feel not many guppies survive to adulthood from a single hatch :/ there are still plenty. I have plants etc etc, but I would also like to try this method, to see what I get

Indeed

I still feel that somehow it is cruel to put her in there. I might try to get a bigger breeding box!

I think you should just let nature take it's course if you actually have some hiding spaces for them. The strongest ones will survive and are more likely to survive into adulthood.

I only used a breeder box for holding fry after my female platy gave birth in the community tank. Now I have a ten gallon that I have my growing platy fry in. I also move the female in maybe a day before she gives birth if I time it right.

I haven't used breeder box and I know that female guppies can either put on hold the birthing process or abort the fry when stressed. Just provide floating plants and she will instinctively go there to give birth. You will be surprised on how many fry can survive when provided with enough cover even in a community tank.
