Blue Oranda

did my weekly water changes, and setup one of my old 20 gallon outside tub as a QT to add some more Sarasa feeder comets. went to 2 Petsmarts, but didn't see any that looked good.

the 2nd store I went to had quite a few oranda's. this particular blue oranda was looking good, swimming around, healthy, nice wen growth, very nice tail fins. I watched it for several minutes and took some pics. I just had to have it.

I just left my PetSmart that had a pretty similar looking one. I had to fight hard to keep from buying it. I just bought my first oranda a week ago. It's still in a temporary holding tank until I can get my new 29 gallon set up for it. Don't need two fish waiting for it. Especially since it's only going to be a 29. Don't know if that would work out so well in the end.

he's been in QT for 4 weeks, looks healthy and disease free. so did a little rearranging during my water change.

the two commons in my 29 were males so moved them out to the 150 gallon patio pond. left with a male and female comet. moved the blue oranda inside.

That’s amazing!- Ive found I f you acclimate the hornwort to hard water and small amounts of fish nibbling - like your fry- it will start making calcium oxalate and get a rough texture and then the gf will nibble but not devour.unless that is a food supplement lol

I have to ask. Why are these called "blue" when they look more bronze or silver even sometimes black? I have one and the pic I saw on another site that led me to believe he was blue instead of black was that the black had a bluish sheen.
I really don't see any blue per se on these. They are extremely beautiful and I'd love an indigo blue one, if they came in that "flavor". I just don't see the blue.
What am I missing? Is mine just black then? Yes, I'll post a pic this weekend when I clean the pond.

they have varying shades of blue. different sites describe it as dusty-blue, or blue-black, or blue-gray.

here he is in the 75g, left side

Really good show quality orandas usually have a lot more blue, but with your typical Oranda from a pet store or something it’s less of a true blue cause they are not bred to be as flawless.
