Good idea. 1/4" painted plywood may be the easiest,

I just use black poster paper on the back of mine. I cut it to match the front then can easily tape it to the back. I tried the static kind from the pet store and it was a nightmare. I posted a picture recently, I'll load it here. I had never had a dark background before and am happy with it as it really put the attention on the fish and plants. I also like that it is black but not as black as my sand or stand. I wouldn't call it charcoal but a light black maybe.
I think if you click on the photo it will get bigger to get a better idea.

Here's same tank with black and then with a plant background with blue in it. I still haven't fully attached it yet but there's clearly a difference between the 2.

I haven't tried grasses in my tank maybe one day, I still have to set up the 75 and transfer everything from the 46 over so I'm gonna have fun with that

HI everyone, I am going to paint my background of my tank and was wondering if I should go with blue or black and if blue what tone of blue? I have white pool filter sand in my tank. I was going to use a background already made, but way to much money for them so I will paint it for cheaper price and I like how it comes out. Any advice would be great and if you have pictures of yours so I can divide? I will be leaving soon to go buy the paint so anything soon will be great! Thanks everyone.

I personally like black, or dark blue. Since you are going to paint the background on the tank, how about going from black on the bottom, gradually fading into light blue at the very top.
If I were you, I would think twice about painting the tank just in case you may want to change backgrounds in the future. I've heard of people using Plasti-dip which peels off in case you don't like it.

Sorry...8 forgot to answer the question. I would go with black.

I did both blue and black tape on backgrounds for my smaller tank before we set up our 125. After having done both, we painted the big tank black. We really like it too. It'll never go out of style either!

*We used plastI dip paint. Turned out amazing!

I prefer a paler blue like the Caribbean. I think that would look really nice with the white sand. It would look more tropical. Alison

I would use acrylic paint cause then I can just wash it off.

I did it the Caribbean blue! Thank you Alison! I love it , but will show some photos later tomorrow when I get home from work because the tank is a little cloudy right now. My mom did the same color a few months ago with another color blue by patching and blending it and I kind of knew I was gonna use that same blue, but wasn't to sure and I'm glad I did.

I use black if I plan any photography, and a deep purple blue tone to throw back light. Darker tanks give stronger fish colours. White gravel lightens colours, as they adapt their colours to the habitat.

Black. It makes the colors of your fish pop out.

Hello
Black is best or dark green, blue for fresh water aquariums is not a good colour. Your fish will feel more settled with dark colours.
You can make your own using the card they sell in art / picture framing shops and painting it with fence paint

We're going with the blue background with black diamond sand. So it begins. Now to get a nice day , to be able to clean it outside.
