Blue Acara boy or girl??

HI all,Just out of the QT two 5"-5.5" Blue Acara one of which I didn't order but they were the last two so.

Need some help sexing them,The only other clue apart from things I have found on the internet is the fact that they swim together tightly all the time(No.2) leads the way.No aggression at all it looks like love

Also on a side note No.2 seems to have slightly ragged tail fins but swims just fine and is happy

Cute fish! #1 is a male and #2 is a female. Looks like you got a pair

It depends on how old the are. It is difficult to place age by size of the fish because some fish grow faster than others. I would say it is likely that they'll spawn in the next couple months.

 

I don't know why be I have a strong feeling that they were a breeding pair as there were only two left in the tank and they were not advertised for sale.

Yeah I noticed with my pair behavior is a good indicator but also the male pectoral (and dorsal I think) fins are longer and pointier at the tips

Its easy to age a fish if you're familiar with the species. Eyes grow at a fairly constant rate, so the size of the eyes tells you the approximate age of the fish.

The eyes of these two show that they have grown reasonably quickly. They're mature fish, yet still quite young.
