Hey, so my neon tetra is bloated. I dont think its dropsy since the scales arent standing up, but its been less active n have this bloat.
Anyone have a diagnosis for this? What should I do? Any help is appreciated!

moderately planted 100 gallon tank. 0 ammonia and nitrites, 10-20 ppm nitrates. Tankmates are 14 gold barbs, 7 otocincluses and 9 other neon tetras.

Is it possible this neon is carrying eggs, or is egg bound? do you notice any courting behaviour i.e this neon swimming slightly away from the shoal with a mate?

I havent seen any courting behavior, I dont even know what courting behavior looks like but will read up on it. Its swimming a little ways away from the shoal but alone. What should i do if it is eggs?

On second inspection, maybe this is just a case of bloat. Usually the swelling in egg-bound fish is further back on the body closer to their vent. For bloating, turn the temperature up a couple of notches (roughly no more than 79F for neon tetras), and feed blanched peas for a few days, cut into small enough bites for neons. If they don't go for it try soaking it in garlic juice. If none of this works after say a week, prepare an epsom salt bath for just that one fish (1tablespoon/gallon). Leave the fish in for 30 minutes and then put him back in the regular tank.

If none of this works, it may be internal parasites, which you will need to treat with something like levamisole or praziquantel.

If it's eggs I'm not really sure of treatments, I've never had this problem. A201 I see you're a guru, any input?

Okiedoke, diet of peas coming up. I have epsom salts and API general cure ready as backup. Thanks for the detailed explanation!

If it is bloated, frozen daphnia may be a better option over peas. Goal is to make her poop, daphnia has the effect.

My female Filamentosa Barbs swell up like the pictured Neon when they are about to scatter eggs. If the Neon is still eating and otherwise acting normally, likely gravid.
Since no other tankmates are exhibiting symptoms, not a good idea to nuke the display tank w/meds.
