Black Sand... save my back

save me from driving an hour each way and from suffering back pain from the drive.
I want black sand for my tank but I don't want to pay an arm and a leg. The nearest tractor supply that has the sand blasting sand is that far away. I can get 50 pounds for like 8 bucks. I've already tried home depot and they don't have anything. The pool store only had some brown/grey stuff. Any other options?

I'm not aware of any black sand that's as cheap as coal slag. Is there a Northern Tool or Menard's that are any closer? Those are the only other places I heard of that carry BDBS.

An hour is not too bad and if you think about how cheap you're getting it for, it's worth it. Maybe take a break halfway and eat lunch to save your back?

Can you have an Uber driver pick it up for you and deliver it to your door? If I was still in the area I would do a pick up and drop off for you but its been a year since I was down there.

I got mine from Nothern Tool. If you do make the trek to TSC, make sure to call first. Mine said it was special order only.

Mine is a good 45 minutes away. Got there, spent 15 minutes looking, asked for it, got told it was special order only, then left and went to Northern Tool to find out they had closed 5 minutes prior. I was angry, lol! Ended up being so worth it, though!

Can you have someone else go and pick it up for you? Maybe a teenaged family member who could use an extra few bucks?
You could see if you could have some shipped but I'm afraid that would be expensive due to the weight.

Hello fellow San Diegan,

Pet Kingdom on Sports Arena Blvd has bulk black sand. It's in a giant tub, bring a bucket or two and buy what you need.

I saw it about a month ago; they had giant tubs of many types of sand - black, red, tan, etc. I don't know the price off the top of my head.

I wish I had been there before I spent $55 on my sand from Amazon though...

@scottishduck i've been there, but if I remember correctly it was $1 per pound, and i'd end up paying $40 for my 40 gallon. Looks like there is no way to avoid a trip to Ramona.

Just called the shop. They have ONE in stock. I had them put it aside for me. Now i'm just waiting for Pet Kingdom to open just to verify the price of the bulks of send per pound before I head out for this 2 hour trip JUST FOR SAND. my godness.

@vanillarose was it difficult to get your plants to stay with the black diamond or no?
el337 thanks. now all I need are plants and fish hahaha, and for it to finish cycling.

I have a thin layer of gravel under my BD to help anchor plants.

I've not had a problem with plants staying in it, except my new dwarf swords that my male angel uprooted yesterday (he was "defending" his territory from my teenage son's teasing)

Thanks for the update. Was that for all their sands? Or just black?

I didnt ask, but its probably for all. I noticed most of their prices are kind of expenisve. I bought an albino tiger barb and a green one and I know i've seen the albinos cheaper somewhere else. at least on fish.
