Black Plakat ... To Get Or Not To Get

KodaAndMe

Isn’t that always the question when making the mistake of looking at the betta section when picking up fish food

Especially when I have a empty 5 gallon sitting next to Niko now

And surprisingly to me, it is a black plakat that caught my eye this time. Usually I like the long flowy tails of the Halfmoon and the bright colours of all varieties - never have I thought of getting a black betta.

I left and at the petshop he stayed - yet I find myself thinking “should I?” Every few minutes...

If you keep thinking about it, yes get it! I always regret when I think I should've gotten that betta and when I go back, it's bought. I want to see what it looks like! Post a picture.

I don’t have a pic unfortunately as I wasn’t even looking to get one , I was there to get fish food and since we lost one betta we decided to get looking to upgrade my tank to a 17g for Niko and just have one betta at a time... for multiple reasons we have decided to stick with 5 gallons instead... so we realistically ‘could’ get another .... wife isn’t sure about a black one , and the fact plakat we never gave a second look , this one may not even be a good sample of a plakat for all I know about them! But something , something , keeps calling me back to the petshop ...

He's calling you to him... Get him... You know you want him. You'll feel depressed when you find that he's gone.

Ahhh this is hard to resist haha !
Maybe we will just go back for another look ...
I’ll post a picture if I can as they are hard to see at this one as they keep them in white breeding nest things ( I forget the name )

Similar to this one https://www.animates.co.nz/wlpet-aquarium-net-breeder.html
Over here they have these in their tanks with all sorts of fish in the tank and one betta floating... well that’s on a good day , sometimes they have one betta in a tank and one in one of these floating in same tank and they flare constantly at each other.
One store does have them in aqua one split betta tanks though - giving them around 8litres per betta which is better

The black plakat is in one of the floaty things - makes it hard to get a good look and sometimes you come away not even knowing if the fish was blue or red lol

So he’s hard to see , he’s black with like brownish lines in tail

Then there is another black one with blue lines in tail

Black with brownish one is in the hard to see pic
Black with blue is in the easy to see one

He's beautiful! I would definitely recommend getting him! Maybe your wife will be more in favor of it of you let her decorate/theme the tank? If she doesn't necessarily like the looks of the betta, then you all could compromise by having the tank just as she may want it with the black betta. Just a suggestion. Good luck!

I think she’s nervous as we have purchased 3 in a few months - two were ill with bad fin rot at time of purchase and then Niko is our healthy Halfmoon. Prior we have to VTs that lived 3 years+ so I think she just wasn’t expecting to lose the others and we all attach to the Bettas - especially our young kids

I do believe asking a fish forum whether or not to get a fish wouldn't have given you an honest answer hehe. It's quite obvious we'd all say 'YES GET THE FISH' because we all are passionate about the hobby. Anyway, you should get the fish!

I know haha , I did expect that answer ... but being kinda new to Bettas ( 4 years in I guess) I am still learning too so I think sharing photos of potential new ones may help me not make the same mistake of buying one with fin rot or similar

He's a rare catch. You should get him and do a black and white contrasting theme! He's beautiful and I want him! They don't have them in my area and if they do, it's a light black colour. Not such a deep colour as him.

Can you show me some ideas on the theme you are meaning please?
The tank currently looks like this photo , I still have a tree stump resin ornament coming which I’ll add photo below

There really is no theme, just a thought that popped into my mind. Like you can have white gravel to contrast against his black colouring so he can stand out and have a mix of black and white accessories. Adding green things will give the tank a zen feel to it too. Here's an example:

so kinda the colouring I’m already doing but more white?
I can’t do white gravel as they don’t have it here except for Shelly looking mixed with white which looks yuk

Well then yeah. More white decorations.

It seems to me a super black is all black , melano is a faded / greyish black and black orchid is deep black with the blue streaks in tail and fins
ThaI is a deep black black with blue streaks in the tail and fins so black orchid

Man I need to avoid entering pet shops. I did resist taking one home this time but it wasn’t easy , a beautiful copper Halfmoon boy dragonscale who’s scales that grown over his eyes. The stupid petshop had them all stressed in these tiny glass things seperated only by clear glass so they were all freaking out being about to see each other. I felt bad for this little guy.
I was tempted but I don’t think more than 2 boys in 5gallons will be suitable for us
