Black Moor Sick any solutions?

Good evening,

My black Moor fish has been fine for a few years and even when I put her in my new planted tank.

However, recently I noticed her scales turning white and falling off. I thought that it might get infected or thought she may be being bullied by the other fish in the tank. But since moving her to quarantine a white fuz has developed. Please can anyone help?

Thanks
Mike

The tank water looks cloudy. Do a big water change. What are your current parameters?

The tank has only just been set up but all the parameters are where they should be. She seems a lot happier in there, despite the cloudy water. In there main tank she was sat at the bottom and hardly moving, even to feed. My tank main tank is heavly planted and the water quality is good. This white fuz has only developed in the last day or so.

Have any of the other fish shown signs of illness? What are your exact parameters?

All other fish are fine,

Nitrate and nitrite levels are either 0 or less the 10 ppm. The PH is around 7.4 and the hardness of the water is where it should be.

Howsabout Ammonia? If the other fish are fine, then it might just be with the Black Moor. Has it shown anything else in the past. How old is it?

Arh, I dont have any test kits for Amonia. I will look to get some.

She had a problem in the past but that's because the first tank I got was far too small, over crowded and the water quality was really poor. Hence the investment into a larger more planted tank.

From researching the issue it said it was white spot, a.fungle infection so I got some pimafix and it cleared right up.

Yeah, it looks like white fungus. Did you medicate in the quarantine tank? You really should have an Ammonia kit (Not trying to sound rude). If the ammonia levels are too high it can cause big problems.

No you're not being rude at all, I didn't even think of Ammonia kits tbh. My old test strips did have Ammonia levels on it but these current ones done. Anyway I've bought some more.

I will look at getting a anti fungal for her. And yes I medicated in the quarantine tank rather than the main one.

Is your qt cycled ? Looks like a fluval flex , which size do you have ? To be honest it’ll just be easier to fill out the emergency template . That looks like a quite nasty bacterial infection but if you answer all the questions in one go it’s saves you having to spends days replying to specific questions and gets to the solution faster which obviously helps the fish.

Hi Blacksheep1,

Yes I have a Fluval 308 external filter on my main 280l tank. The tank in which my Black Moor is now in is a small 80l, the first one I bought and the filtration is ok for it. I will look at the emergency template and fill it out too.

Thanks for your help.
Tank
What is the water volume of the tank? - 280l
How long has the tank been running? Just over a year
Does it have a filter? Yes - Fluval 308 External
Does it have a heater? Yes
What is the water temperature? 23 - 24 degree C
What is the entire stocking of this tank? (Please list all fish and inverts.) 1 white fancy goldfish, a plec, and a Golden sucker fish

Maintenance
How often do you change the water? Once per week
How much of the water do you change? 30 - 50%
What do you use to treat your water? Aquasafe
Do you vacuum the substrate or just the water? - Substrate is aquasoil

*Parameters - Very Important
Did you cycle your tank before adding fish? - Yes
What do you use to test the water? - Standard test strips
What are your parameters? We need to know the exact numbers, not just “fine” or “safe”.
Ammonia: Unknown, test strip does not have ammonia test on it. Have just bought some
Nitrite: 0 - 10 ppm
Nitrate: 0 - 10 ppm
pH: 7.6 - 7.8

Feeding
How often do you feed your fish? Once per day
How much do you feed your fish? Only what they eat in 5 minutes
What brand of food do you feed your fish? - Tetra sticks
Do you feed frozen? No
Do you feed freeze-dried foods? No

Illness & Symptoms
How long have you had this fish? 3 years
How long ago did you first notice these symptoms? - Around 3 - 4 days ago
In a few words, can you explain the symptoms? - The black moor had developped white scales across its body, I originally thought it was being nipped at by the white fancy or the golden sucker. She was just lying at the bottom of the tank and not moving, even for food. I therefore got my old tank out and set it up for quarentine. When I put the black Moor in she seems to perk up right away and start eating again.
Only today 01/09/22, did I notice that where the scales had been affected did a white fuz start to appear.
Have you started any treatment for the illness? - Yes a anti fungal
Was your fish physically ill or injured upon purchase? No
How has its behavior and appearance changed, if at all? - In the main tank she was just lying at the bottom. In the quarentine tank she seems to be more active.

Explain your emergency situation in detail.
(Please give a clear explanation of what is going on, include details from the beginning of the illness leading up to now)

Include pictures - Pictures included above

First issue I see is that you have 10nitrites .. that leads me to believe you have ammonia too, in an uncycled tank. Can you add a rock or a sponge from an established tank ?

i appreciate you’ve separated the fish into qt, but if not using cycled media such as filter sponges from an established tank , that bacteria will take a while to catch up and you’re essentially doing a fish in cycle, with an already weak/ sick fish. I suggest you do another 50% wc as soon as possible . Gold fish are messy fish and in a new tank ( I don’t know if you seeded it from another tank you have (( that would help )) ) you’re likely to see a spike . Keep the water as clean as possible , do as many water changes as needed to keep ammonia ( I know you don’t have a test for this ) and nitrite at 0. You can do two 50% wc’s in a day, for example one in the morning one at night.

is it possible for you to purchase prime ? It can bind ammonia for up to 48 hours ( claimed ) so that your cycle has time to catch up . Water changes will help your fishy friend a lot . Others may help with a suggestion on a medication , but that’s for others to say, I’d not like to comment on the med front.

Hello all,

I just wanted to post an update and say thank you to everyone who replied and helped me out.

My Black Moor is doing amazingly well and her scales have returned to being black, albeit slightly lighter. The main thing is she is doing well and is now back in the main tank.

All tests show 0 across the board for Ammonia, nitrates and nitrites, Ph levels are looking good and generally everything is going well.

Here are some photos of her back in the new tank.

Thank you all again
