Welcome to FishLore!

Unfortunately we'll need a bit more information.

1. Is this fish in your 40 gallon tank?
2. Your profile says you're familiar with the nitrogen cycle; was this tank previously cycled? What are your water parameters? What do you use to test, liquid or strips?
3. What is your water change schedule like?
4. How long has your black moor been acting differently?
5. Is he/she showing any other symptoms?
6. Can you post a picture? It will be hard to diagnose without a visual aid.

hey kinezumi89 thanks for helping me out yeah the black moor is in the 40 gallon yeah the tank is fully cycled I have had it set up for a year I change like 40 percent of water every 4 days well I only had one fantail but I bought the black moor like 1 month ago it used to stay at the bottom all the time even when in the pet store it goes into a corner by itself doesn't seem to like the fantail very much I took various pics but they all come out looking blurry sorry I will keep trying though I am using the apI test strips currently I am out of the strips but the fantail looks fine thank you for your time

Since you're out of the strips, I would definitely recommend getting the API freshwater master test kit instead. It's a liquid kit, and it MUCH more reliable than strips. Strips really can't be trusted, unfortunately. The liquid kit is a bit more expensive initially, but it lasts awhile so it's cheaper in the long run. It definitely sounds like you're doing enough water changes though, which is good since goldfish are big waste producers.

Good luck taking a picture! I take TONS of pictures, and sometimes one or two turn out alright.

I think a good next step would be to get an API freshwater master test kit, and test your water. Then let us know the results, and we can go from there. There's a chance you're going through a mini-cycle, and maybe you have some ammonia or nitrite, but don't know since you don't have a reliable testing method. The kit is about $30 at Petsmart or Petco, but you can get it for $20 on Amazon. Of course, then you have to wait for it to be shipped here, which may take a few days.

Let us know what your test results are! Be sure when you do the nitrate test, to REALLY shake the second bottle well, otherwise your test will be inaccurate. Otherwise, follow the instructions to a T and you'll be set.
