I recently bought a black lava rock from petco and need to know if it's actually safe for use in an aquarium. I originally bought it for a terrarium, but had the idea of siliconing it to the side leaving it half in, half out of the water for a decoration.

I need to know if it's too rough for aquarium use or if it's going to change my PH. Thanks!

Test it by putting some vinegar on the rock, if it bubbles/fizzes it is not safe.
I think it is safe based on my quick google, but better safe than sorry. Also it may uppity up your hardness and pH keep an eye on those values after you add the rocks.

Lava rock is inert. It's fine to use.

Will distilled vinegar work? I will post a picture in a minute.

It fizzed... So I guess it's just going to be a background rock for my terrarium. Thanks!

    - Picture didn't work, but the rock is really neat looking with black and silver.
