Black Fish & Clean Water

My LFS has a sign on every tank in which they house black colored fish. In my case, I purchased a black female molly and read the sign. It says:

"Did you know? All-black fish are more sensitive to water conditions and need perfectly clean water?"

Why is that? What about their scale color determines a greater need for clean water than any other molly in my tank?

I've never heard that before.

I have never heard that. Could you ask them what they base this on?

Would be great if they had the sign in front of every fish, by the way, instead of sending people away with new pets and not giving them any advice on care, like most LFS do.

I've never heard or read that.

Umm, knowing what most petstores are, could it be just one of their fads to put something like that up, if you see what I mean...

Did it also follow that statement with something like "So try 'this product' to help keep your water clean and clear"? I just did a quick scan of the internet to see if anyone anywhere has said something similar and I couldn't find a single statement that said anything remotely like that. Something sounds very off about that statement, and I would definitely love to hear their reasoning for it... that is if anyone working there actually knows.

No recommendations to buy a product at all. That's all the sign said. I will try and find an excuse to stop in tomorrow and see if I can get an explanation. Interesting that no one else has heard this!

You raise a good point! I do have a few wants for my tanks. But I have to remember that I just paid all my bills this week and until the next paycheck I should only be purchasing "needs" ;-)

Yeah, I definitely went overboard this month and seriously need to calm down on the odd fish bill. After I go to the shop tomorrow to pick up an entirely new set up , that is!

That's something I've never heard of before and I can't think of a biological reason black fish would have more sensitive needs than a fish of the same species but a different color. I'd file that 'fact' in the good ol' file 13.

Well it's like all turtle color cats are female (which, by the way, in my experience, is true), and all white cats are mentally disturbed!
