i am in the process of doing a brand new 55 build from scratch - can i just dump the Black Diamond in my tank and do 2/3 water changes as opposed to time and effort expended in the rinsing process? This is all before dechlorination and start of the cycle process. Thanks!

I personally would put it in a bucket under your tub faucet and run hot water through it. I know it is a pain, but it's well worth the time and effort since it does give off a oily substance at first. I find that to be easier than putting it in your tank and then rinsing it.

Above advise is your best bet. Personally, I didn't have the oily reside issue, but I also rinsed it well before hand.

I put my pool filter sand in a bucket and ran the garden hose at medium-high flow. I pointed the hose angled at one side of the bucket so it made a swirling centrifuge and removed the smaller, lighter sand grains in just a minute or two per bucket. It's hard to describe instead of show, but think of how you swirl when panning for gold. It didn't take me very long to do and made me feel better about putting it in my tank

Please rinse it, and in a way like wateriswet did. I spent two hours changing water in my tank to try and get it clear. it looks great, but it takes ages to wash if you don't do it right.

Thanks for the advice - I know rinsing is probably the best way... I was trying to save my tender old back the soreness of the rinse process, lol...
