Hey guys, thinking about setting up a new tank with black diamond blasting sand and was wondering if it would be ok for a rabbit snails . If so,which would be better..fine or medium grade? I read that it can be kinda “sharp “ but didn’t want to use it, if it’s not safe for the rabbit snails that I will be getting. Thanks

I tried using it & no...just no!!

It is very sharp ground dwellers will not like it neither will anything with barbells my snails did not do well on it it has this weird consistency so you can't clean it as well as you can stand and you can't clean it like you would gravel because it gets caught up in the siphon, it's cheap and beautiful and all in all my animals suffered through it but they didn't Thrive and neither did my plants they did okay but just okay and considering how much of a pain in the it was too clean & unclog the siphon vacuum I would never go back to it again.

My Cory didn't dig feed as much either.

I'll give one vote for.

I originally always bought the Imaginarium brand for aquariums, but it's so expensive, so I tried the BDBS in a couple of my tanks and I really like it. It holds the plants better and looks really nice.

I have Mystery Snails on it and they are just fine. I don't have any problems with the siphoning either. I've found that the key to siphoning sand is to A. not leave the siphon in the sand too long or just hover over to get the top layer (the plants like the gunk in the sand anyways) and B. make sure to use the right sized vac. If I use too short of a tube, I have to keep pulling it up to not get sand in go through to the bucket.

The medium grade works fine for my corys, snails, and other bottom dwellers. All my plecos do fine on it too. I think the rabbit snails would do fine on it. I also have some really healthy plants growing in it.

I've used medium grade with a number of bottom dwellers, including loaches, cories and cats without any problems for years. That's not to suggest someone has not had another experience, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. I use a python to clean it, positioning the hose right above the sand and my messy cichlids are as healthy as can be. It can leave an oily residue even if you rinse it, but it is not harmful to the fish and I can usually either wipe it off or the filters will take care of it. Eventually it will dissipate.

I use medium grade and love it. Have tried several different substrates, from sand to gravel to soil and more and BDBS is my favorite. Cleans up easy. Beautiful. Inexpensive. Just fine for my dwarf hasbrosus and 3 stripe corydoras (they have long, lovely barbels) and my super chunky mystery snail. And my plants do fantastic in it with root tabs.

Can not say about rabbits but all of my snails, catfish and others with delicate mouth parts have always done well. Been using it for many years.
