Black Clumps on Java Fern

Today when doing my weekly maintenance I moved some of my plants around. I have a Java fern with the Rhizome above the sand, but the long roots in the sand. When I pulled it up it looked like the sand stuck to the roots. But when I felt it, the size didn't match. The black clumps were larger diameter than my sand. My first though it maybe a mixture of sand and snail eggs. My Black Kuhli Loaches have been hiding in that fern as well. Could it be Kuhli Eggs? I've searched an not found much info on kuhli eggs, other than it's hard to breed them.

And of course I forgot to take a picture before putting everything back together.

Without a pic it's hard to say. Most likely not kuhli eggs, but as to what it was, no idea.

Never mind. When I pulled it up this time to take pictures it just fell off. It looked like sand, so it was probably just anchoring to the larger sand particles.
