Gorgeous plant! So exciting about the spawns! Where are you going to put the babies...

Thanks this blue pair has failed four times. So I'm not getting my hopes up yet! Lol

But I do have a couple 10 gallons ready for some newborns when one of these blue Pairs finally succeeds for me!!!

I'm really hoping to get some pearlscale blues, so I'm focused on trying to get that blue pearlscale pair to succeed right now! They are the ones who just got the big new plant they immediately started cleaning the leaves, so they'll probably Spawn in the next couple days. That will be their second try....

bizaliz3 you should make a family tree of all your angels! It's been hard to remember who is who, and it would be a great way to remember your beloved passed fishies. There are probably online ways to make them but I've drawn one. It was a Star Wars family tree. I made it a year or so ago but I will see if I can find it for an example. That's unlikely though haha

Seconded! I made one for a fanfic once in InDesign, it was pretty easy! (A lot of repetitive, tedious steps, but relatively easy.) But Little Tank is right, there's probably a site out there that'll help you make one.

A family tree would be tough because I think of that more as a multiple generation type thing. I don't have much for multiple generations...I just have a bunch of pairs that have taken turns with eachother. Haha do you have any suggestions as to how I could "map them out"?

This post I quoted below shows all the different pairs
For fun....here are all of the pairs I have had over the last 2 years (notice there are some who have had multiple partners)

My first.... dad then mom

The blue pair ate their eggs again uggg!
And this time they ate them a day earlier than they have on their past attempts. Boo

The gold/albino pearlscale pair failed over and over again in the larger 46 gallon as well. As soon as I put them in the smaller 29 gallon they immediately succeeded. Odd... but I'm thinking about trying it with the blue pair now. I have Bella and the pinoy in the 29 at the moment.... but they haven't spawned in quite a while. I'm concerned there is something wrong with them.... both pairs were moved out of the 75 at the same time. The blue pair has spawned twice and they have not spawned at all. And they've been acting somewhat lethargic....so I'm concerned.

Naill and the pearlscale albinos eggs look beautiful this morning she really laid those eggs beautifully

The big blue pearlscale male and the little Platinum pearlscale female are getting close to another spawn and I'm looking forward to them using the Giant stunning anubias hastifolia plant I gave them! Those are the babies I most want to raise at the moment!! To be honest, if it's between them and the other blue pair I want these guys' babies more anyway!!! So maybe it's a blessing that the non pearlscale blue pair didn't succeed....

I hope you get that dream spawn. I don't know how you handle it all. I think I am going to be satisfied that I have had a couple pairs successfully spawned and end it there.

Thanks me too!
I don't blame you for being done. Raising a couple spawns is a great experience there's really no reason to go crazy like I have! It's a LOT of work!!!!

To be honest the only thing really left on my angelfish breeding bucket list is getting one big spawn from this blue pearlscale pair! (Big blue and the platinum) getting babies from the other blue pair or even Bella and pinoy are not absolute musts....while it would be nice....

I currently have a big group of 3-week old babies from Niall Junior and the koi female. I Haven't really talked about them much. And I honestly didn't really want to raise a big group of what appears to be marbles. Been there done that! They are a few weeks old now though, so there's no turning back!!

I also don't feel like raising a batch from Niall Junior and the albino pearlscale either....I expect nothing but marbles out of that mixture as well. But I have this weird Obsession where I need to raise at least one batch from each pair. I really don't have the room to raise more than 2 large spawns at the same time. It's just impossible. So if I do raise some of their babies it will be a small population of them and I will let nature take its course for the rest of them in the 55 gallon community. That's assuming they even succeed with this batch since it's their first spawn as a pair.

Long story short...... once I get my nice big Spawn from the Big Blue Pearlscale and the little platinum pearlscale, I will likely pursue selling the rest of my pairs..... I'm exhausted. I haven't really decided which adults I will be keeping for sure. So some will be sold singly and some will be sold as pairs.... depending on which adults I choose to keep.

I've gotten really overwhelmed. It's frustrating that it is impossible to keep a male and female together without them spawning!!! I've learned that over and over again as my angels keep switching partners anytime I separate them from their current partner!

Well, Niall Jr and the pearlscale albino are plugging away. They are doing an excellent job. They are at the step where they start moving their babies, as they hatch, to a new location. Normally my angels pick another leaf somewhere, or an ornament or something….but these guys have chosen to just move them to the algae covered glass directly above the leaf they are currently on. LOL

8105159338f42bc6cdb58301b57e177d.jpg

One interesting tid-bit……this is only the 2nd time I have ever had angels choose to put their newly hatched wigglers on the glass. The only other time it happened was with my very first batch….NIAL JR AND HIS SIBLINGS!!! LOL So maybe he had a memory of being placed on the glass after hatching when he was a baby! LOLOLOL

Now…I am not going to say I don’t care about this batch…but it is getting bit annoying that the ones that succeed are the ones I am not really looking to raise babies from. I mean…even the pearlscale pair did not succeed until I decided I didn’t care anymore!! LOL But unless I keep only males together, or only females together, I can’t prevent my angels from spawning!! I just wish these blue pairs would succeed for me! But clearly Niall Jr is a great dad. He had a successful spawn with ALL 3 of his girlfriends. And each time it was on their first and only spawn. Once with Black Mamba, once with the Koi mom and now with the pearlscale albino. He is a talented boy!! And I raised him I feel proud. Hehe

The Blue pearlscale pair should spawn again in the next few days. If this one isn’t a success, I will be removing their eggs on their next go round. I really want my blue pearlscale babies! I usually like to give them at least 3 tries before stealing their eggs….but I think I may just give them two chances! I hope they surprise me so I don’t have to take that route. Maybe if I pretend I don’t care they will succeed?

So interesting that the angel that chooses to stick his wigglers on the glass was stuck to the glass as a wiggler himself! Maybe it is instinctive, like fish returning to the same place they were born to spawn... Regardless, he is definitely a good father so yes, you should feel very proud!! I hope you get your blue pearlscale babies!!

The two pairs in my 55 are being quite Pleasant and cooperative and willing to share.... they seem to be perfectly content having their own half of the tank without me needing to divide the tank! You know how that goes, lol, so I'm pleased that it hasn't been needed.

In this picture you can see each of the pairs on their own end of the tank with their babies lol

Biz, it's a ways off but I think i'm changing my mind on my future plans of my tanks.

Long story short I've decided I don't want to do a sajica pair in my 40 breeder and am going to try a harem in my 75 with my severum instead. That leaves the 40 open and I'm thinking some of your angels will be PERFECT for it. This is months and months off but keep me in mind as I may be making an order sometime this winter

I can't keep males and females together without them making babies! It crazy. I just need a break!! Lol

I've got 3 batches of babies from three different pairs at the moment!!! And that does not include my new blue pearlscale eggs! It's just crazy. I wish I could have them all fixed!!!! Haha

I want less tanks too...and that can't happen with all the breeding taking place in my house!!

So...as the current NON blue pearlscales develop its getting more and more fascinating all the different types.

One thing that is really baffling me is that many of the gold babies, if they catch the light just right, have goldish whitish bars in the same place a silver or zebra would have their black bars. I'd expect that from a silver albino or zebra albino...but they don't have red eyes (but do have an albino mom)

It's almost impossible to capture in a photo....this is the best I could do....can you guys see the faint white gold stripes?
804e084b42f27af4087ff0eb2936c61c.jpg

@chromedome have you seen anything like that? AlyeskaGirl how about you? Anyone else?

Of and for the record...I mentioned earlier that I did not see clowns...well there are clowns in this batch. And zebras and golds and blushing and the gold ones with faint gold bars...here is a clown. The stripes are jumbled making it a clown.

Good news. Mom did finally give in and allow the babies to be moved. And they are all still on the new Leaf looking great this morning!!!! Yay!!

I plan to remove maybe half of them tonight. I really want to make sure I get some and I don't know what to expect from this pair on their 2nd try. But I want them to keep a nice chunk of babies for a little while too.

Niall jr and the albino's babies are attempting to free swim. Mom and Dad aren't allowing it at this point.

HI Biz

I have been reading this entire thread over the course of three days, so about 30 pages a day! I didnt want an Angel in particular before I started this thread, but by the end of it your complicated Angel family has inspired me to make it a priority for my community tank! Shame I live in the uk or I would try and order from you!

Thank you for sharing your journey, it has been a very interesting read with lots of twists and turns and I will definitely be following from now on.

All of your angels and babies look so nice, if I had to pick a favourite it would have to be Niall jr! What would his "colour type" be called? I am a bit new at this!

Very well done on all that you have achieved so far, you must be very proud of your babies!

Well it's been a couple days...so here's an update.

Sadly the pearlscale blue pair ate their wigglers yesterday. So they moved them so diligently and cared for them for another 24 hours and then ate them :-( boo

The ones that I stole from them and put into a 10-gallon are still wiggling away. I've lost a lot of them into the Moss bundle that I have in this tank.... I can see them wiggling in there so I just hope they don't get stuck or something. I'm compelled to try and shake them out of the Moss.....what do you guys think?

In other news...Nial Jr and the pearlscale albino's babies have gotten very active. I feel bad that I don't have a tank to put them in so they need to just stay with their parents in the community tank. But I can probably get a tank arranged for them in the near future. My newest batch of pleco babies will be upgraded from the 20 gallon high to the 30 gallon soon. So those angel babies could go in there maybe....

I also have almost 4 week old babies from Niall jr and the koi. They need upgrading asap....

My gorgeous giant pearlscale spawn is approx 7 weeks old. They are taking up a 46 bow front and a 40 gallon at the moment. I'm hoping within a few more weeks they will be able to start going to the fish store which will open up space for the newer batches of babies.

It's so stressful.... if the pearlscale blue babies that I moved are successful, that means I've got four spawns simultaneously. That's a record for me.

I just want these pearlscale Blues to make it so bad for me. But I'm paranoid because the last time that I had wigglers from the big blue pearlscale dad they all dropped dead on me in the 10-gallon out of nowhere... just a day before they were expected to start free swimming. Granted that was with a different female. And I have no idea what was the ultimate cause. But I'm just paranoid that their Wigglers are going to just die on me. And all the while the babies from the pairs I'm not all that excited about will just keep thriving!!

But I need to stay positive!

  • #1,047
If it were me, I'd shake them out VERY GENTLY lol. I feel better when I can see my babies so having them all tucked into the moss would make me crazy!

Mcasella
  • #1,048
They should be fine in the moss, they will wiggle and it won't hurt them as they will wiggle enough to swim out once they stop being sticky - I would use a pipette to gently squirt them out as opposed to shaking them out as they come off easier in this method if you do decide to move them out.
