my sister-in-law is giving me her 33gal tank today and I was wondering if this was big enough for a pair of chiclids. not large Oscars or big jack Dempsey's but 2 med size like elec blue and those yellow ones. I just started the tank today so I got a while to research what breed is going to max out at 6in. if you have any breeds that would work let me know so I can look them up

If you are adding just a pair, the 33G should be fine. If the tank is longer, rather than taller, all the better. Do your homework tho... electric yellow and blues may indeed need a larger tank.

IMO, Dwarf cichlids are great for a 33G. Dwarfs are smaller and also come in a wide range of color (yellow and blue too) and tend to be more peaceful... Because they are smaller you may be able to get more than just the pair, depending on which ones you pick. And, unlike most other cichlids, you can add other fish to the tank like certain tetras and catfish.

Dwarfs are cool. Check em out! I like the Blue and Golden Ram.

You should be fine with a pair of med size Cichlids. I have a 30 gal long with a pair of Kenyi's and Krib...as well as some community fish. Everyone gets along fine. My Kenyi's rule the tank and are now about 4 inches each. They've doubled in size since I got them about 3 months ago.

errrr...
The author said he/she didn't want to put in oscars of JD's ...
For smaller cichlids, 33 gallons is fine in my honest opinion. They will thrive.

You could keep about 12 fish. Put double the filtration on it...african are dirty. You should have 1 male to at least 2 females. SO you could go with 4 of 3 species OR 3 of 4 species...I would go for dwarf mbunas. Electric blue haps can get big & are aggressive at times. The yellow ones are called Labdiochromis Caeruleus, Yellow labs. They are dwarf & pretty mild mannered compared to any species. Any type of Cynotilapia afra or Pseudotropheus sp. "Acei" would be fine too.
Here's species to stay away from until you have a bigger tank: Anything that has highly aggressive or regular aggressive in it's profile, I'd stay away from.
Melanochromis Chipokae...anything with Melanchromis is not going to work in your tank unless they are babies that are going to be upgraded someday.
Labeotropheus fuellebornI
Labeotropheus trewavasae
Metriaclima lombardoi/Kenyi
Pseudotropheus demasonI (Pombo Rocks) This they species of fish is like $50 for a single fish here in a LFS.

I hope this helps you out.
Here's a link that has a lot of the species:
