Who snatched their weave? Why are some bettas born with no scales on their head? I'm assuming just from bad breeding maybe...?

Scale Weave Snatched

Scale Weave Intact ( Dont mind the fins growing back after fin rot and the food)

I think it is ammonia burns. Usually the first place ammonia shows is the head and gills. When I first got my bettas, they all had pink heads, with no scales. They all grew back.

It’s not that there’s no scales on their head, it’s just those scales are not irridescent. Or at least that is my thinking.

I’ve has fish do more or less the same, it’s just them coloring up.

It could be very black that you can't see the fine lines of the scales and yes they can sometimes not have scales on their head. Maybe from bad breeding, maybe from genetics.

Hmm maybe so sadly I had no control over that.

Of course now he has to sleep and doesn't want to come out, I will take a closer picture later and zoom in.

Yeah hard to tell I will have to get a closer look.

I have two bettas, a vieltail and a dragon scale and both don’t have coloration on their heads. Black. However, if you keep looking close you can start to see the scale lines. As they get adjusted to their homes, their color will come back. My bettas are just starting to get color there and I’ve had one for a month and the other for two. Got both from Petsmart. Keep them healthy and their color will really show.

Its been 2 years of waiting. I just checked and see a little bit of a outline but not in the center.

Oh wow. If it’s been 2 years then I don’t know. I know my veiltail still has black on his head and I think his type stay that way. I know with the dragon scale they completely cover. If it’s not actual scales though and it’s just.. their flesh then I have no idea. Where did you get them? Could be bad breeding or the bad conditions they were in previously(if they were)?

They have scales, just not iridescent. With dragonscale (and metallic) bettas, a black marking in the head is usually referred to as a skunk stripe, which depending on the individual is sort after or not.

Your betta is fine.
