Bettas for my Birthday

Hey guys, my birthday was January 17th and I got a Male betta... Sucky thing is I have ZERO space and there is no way whatsoever that I can keep him, so I have to return him to PetSmart. It's so sad... I cried..

Here are some pictures (yes, He was in a vase. I added in the quick start and stuff and got the ammonia and nitrites down to 0 pretty fast, while I have him.)

He's such a pretty color... too bad I can't keep him. Nickname is Nick, for one of my fav. movie characters right now.

Here's a better picture of him, a little, just wanted to show that his fins are healthy, despite how they look in the first picture.

Say hello and Good bye... ;D :'(

I'm sorry you had to return him, but it sounds like it was for the best! He is beautiful!

Did you have a filter on the vase? Curious as to how you got rid of nitrites that fast unless you have a filter, but at least you gave him clean water for a bit!

I dosed the tank the night I got him and tested the water the next day. Nitrites where 0 and ammonia was .25. IN about an hour, It was down to 0, so The water's clean..

No filter...

He reminded me SO MUCH of my very first betta Jackson... I'm so sad!!!

I don't think you had nitrites in the first place then. You'd need a filter for water movement over the BB (and a place for them to live).

Too bad you don't have room for a 2.5 gal!

I'm sorry, dear. :'( You did the best thing for him, and I admire that trait so much. Many people wouldn't even care to give him a better chance regardless of whether or not they had room or a proper tank.

Moss ball! Just roll it around a few times a week so it doesn't develop brown spots.

Of course! The marimos do fine in vases from what I've heard.

I don't need anything like a heater, or a little fish to produce ammonia... maybe a shrimp? and if it was just the marimo, how often do I need to change the water? how big water changes?
(I have a 5 dollar rewards points at petco that are expiring, which cuts the price to $4 plus tax!! yay!)

I think aliray was the one I heard recommend it on another thread long ago. She may be able to help more.

I think some tall bamboo stems would be beautiful in there. I'm sorry you had to return your betta. He was beautiful!

A marimo moss ball would be a great idea. That is kind of what started the moss ball craze in Japan years ago. Kind of like Americas craze with the Pet Rock. It doesn.t need a heater . Just once every couple of weeks take it out and gently roll it in your hands like making a meatball. It helps it to keep it's nice round shape. To clean them you just gently squish them in water a couple of times and then GENTLY roll them in you hands and back into the water. By doing that you also are moving them so that eventually all sides get exposed to the light. It is kind of like a pet without all the work and they are soft and almost velvety. It is like having a little water Zen garden. Alison

I would use dechlorinated water like you would for your fish, and yes I would change the water every couple of weeks just because it is stagnant water unless you have an airstone in it. No you don't need one .However you could just give it a sniff once in awhile and change it if it has an off odor. A lot of people in Japan keep the moss balls in water for that zen effect. I would also not put it in direct sunlight, use indirect light. Alison

I am sorry I have never figured that out. Hubby is supposed to sit down one of these days to try and figure it out. I am computer challenged to say the least. You could try looking them up on YTUBE try Japanese marimo moss ball gardens or table top decorations using live Japanese Marimo moss balls. Alison
