10 Gallon Tank Bettas Fins turning transparent at ends

My bettas (Francis) fins have suddenly started turning white and transparent at the ends. He’s usually kept in a 10 gallon tank with a canister filter but I have just switched to a bio filter and air stone because he didn’t seem to be a fan of how strong his old filter was. His water temperature is kept around 74-75°f. He is kept with 4 young mystery snails along with a moss ball, lucky bamboo, a small java fern and some duckweed floating at the top. He has constipation or bloat so I moved him to a temporary smaller tank to feed him peas to try and deal with that when I noticed his fins. I’m quite worried because I cannot find anything about what may be happening to him. He used to be quite active and now he hangs out at the bottom of his tank or on his curly lucky bamboo.

Hi, and welcome to Fishlore! So glad you joined!!! :)

Poor little Francis! He does look unwell.

Whenever you see bloat to that extent, it usually means that there is some organ damage going on, and fluid is building up inside his body. Or, there might be a tumor of some sort, but in my experience, it is usually organ failure. Unfortunately, they usually don't get better once this happens because there is no way to reverse that kind of problem.

It is good that you have him in a hospital tank. I would make him as comfortable as possible. If he has trouble swimming, you can lower the water level so he can reach the top easier for air. You can also add something for him to lay on at the top of the tank, like one of those betta leaves with the suction cup, or a plant, real or silk, with large leaves.

I would stop feeding him peas. Even though so many people recommend that, they really can't digest plant material. Feed him some good, pure protein foods, like frozen daphnia or frozen brine shrimp if you can get it, or a really good pellet like Omega One or New Life Spectrum, if he will eat. Make sure you soak his pellets before you feed him.

Then I would do daily water changes. The water changes will help with the fin problem, and it helps to keep his water pristine. You can add a little aquarium salt to the hospital tank to help with his osmotic processes. Make sure you are using a good water conditioner with each change, and make sure the temp of the new water matches the temp of the tank water. Bettas need to be kept at a temp of 78 to 80 degrees. Cooler water causes them stress, and stress causes illness.

Hope this helps a little...
