Hi, my Dumbo Crowntail Betta (named Patriot) has white spots all over his chin and face. Already have MelaFix and looks like I am not going to get more medication any time soon. Can I use MelaFix to treat Patriot? Says it works for bacterial..

Thanks,

Christian

Melafix will do nothing for ich. Ich is a parasite not a bacteria. Can you post a picture?

I advise strongly against using Melafix for a Betta. It is an aromatic oil from a melaluca tree and there's some concern that it can damage the labyrinth organ in labyrinth fish like bettas and gouramis. Ich is a parasite (a worm) watch the video link above. Melafix will do absolutely nothing to it! Get some medication to treat ich. The only other thing you can try is heat. Do you have an adjustable heater in that 1 gallon thing you have the betta in? If you do, you can turn the temperature up to 86°F and that might help kill the parasite, but you will need to keep the temp that high for at least a week. Are you keeping the betta in a 1 gallon jug all the time? With a filter?

It’s a Tetra HT Submersible Aquarium a Heater, and has Electronic Thermostat. Going to move to him to larger tank, but going to see if heater fits... Will that help? Says that maintains temp around 78.

He is in a TopFin 1 Gal, with an Element Filter. Here are some pics.

I have never used melafix because of all the bad things I have heard about it.
Epsom or aquarium salt.
Or general cure, which you can get at your lps

Ok, I’ll do Epsom with a heater. Is that fine? Btw not 100% sure he has Ick.

Those are pics before he had Ich.. just to show tank. Is 50w heater ok in one gallon? Just put it in.

Ok. That would explain why I don’t see ich.

I would think a 50w heater would be fine for a one gallon.

Do not use a heater in a 1 gallon because it is difficult to maintain a temperature and not overheat it because it is so small. Use a heater if you have a 5+ gallon

It’s a good heater, and he swims on complete other area. Doesn’t look cramped in the tank. The possible Ich is white spots all on his chin. Seems like Ich but like I said, not 100% so i’ll check again.

I don’t want to fry Patriot...

Heater is on in the one gallon. He looks fine. It only bumps it up right around 80..
