Betta with holes in fin

I just recently noticed my little guy has two small pin sized holes in his topfins. Is this the beginning of fin rot? He's in a 5 gallon with a heater and filter and some live plants. I have a almond leaf in there at the moment. He does seem a little sluggish and is laying on his heater.

I have never known fin rot to start as pinholes. It's more likely that he got caught on something in the tank. The IAL will help, along with frequent water changes. Bettas' fins heal quickly with super clean water and IAL.

Are your water parameters ok? Temp good?

I currently only have the test to do ammonia and nitrate and they were both good. And my temp is 80. I do have a green algae issue at the moment so I don't know if that is causing the sluggishness. I will check his tank for anything sharp, the only thing I can think of is the steam of the almond leaf?

Temp is good; I am not sure how the algae would affect him.
I also use Stress Guard by Seachem when I do big water changes. It kind of acts like a liquid bandage. It is an anti-septic, and helps de-stress the fish. When my betta had a hole in his fin, I used Stress Guard, IAL, and did small water changes every other day.

I am curious about the algae. I will have to do some research about that. I thought that I had an algae bloom at one time, and I did read that it would not harm the fish, but that was a while ago, and my memory could be faulty.

This is his tank right now, it looks pretty dirty but I'm not sure how to tidy it up. I pick the algae out with my hand or he seems to get tangled in it

When I was trying to figure out what kind of algae I had, I went to this link. It is a very good page because it has really good pictures of the different kinds of algae, and it also tells you how to get rid of it.

My betta occasionally gets pinholes, it usually happens when the lights first click on and they see their reflection and flare up in a greater arch than what is naturally normal for the fish’s fin spread, this will sometimes cause a little hole to rip, kind of like a strained muscle. If the tank conditions are good, which they seem like they are, it will heal in a few days if not overnight.
