HI everyone,
I have had a Betta for 8 months now. He is in a 10 gal tank by himself.
PH 8
Ammonia 0
Nitrites 0
Nitrates close to 0 but have multiple live plants in there.
Aqueon 10 gal filter and heater, plus an air pump.
50% water changes twice a week.
He was happy and healthy, making bubble nests until I had to go away for a bit more than 3 months (necessarily) and let my boyfriend take care of him, my 120 gal goldfish tank and another 30 gal tropical tank. I returned and had lost a platy, 3 goldfish and my betta had severe fin rot and dropsy. I'm not sure how long he has had the dropsy but I think for a while because we didn't know we were over feeding him (3 pellets morning and 3 at night). I feel awful, I had read the wrong thing!
It hurts to even think of euthanasia... I treated for 10 days with Maracyn 2, aquarium salt, daily 50% water changes and feeding only a single pellet a day. The fin rot stopped progressing, it's even getting slowly better. He's a little less bloated but the dropsy remained. I continued treating with Kanaplex and Paraguard, 50% water changes every other day and feeding 2 pellets daily. I finished the 3 recommended doses of Kanaplex, but now the pineconing is not only in his upper body, it started progressing to the rest of the body too, closer to the tail. What should I do?? Move on to different meds like neoplex, tetracycline or general cure? He's almost always on his leaf bed that is close to the surface. He never stopped eating and always looks happy to see me and thus I'm so reluctant to take a life, I mean, wouldn't you cling on your life even if you were suffering?
I took a few pictures to show both the fin rot and the dropsy.
Thank you for reading. Any input is highly appreciated!
PS If you suggest euthanasia, is clove oil & alcohol the best way?
