Betta Tank - Plants, Places To Buy, Tankmates

Hello. I have a 10 gallon tank, and I am planning on getting a Betta fish. I have a few questions.

1. For Canada - what are the best websites to order a Betta from? What are your favourite kinds of Bettas and why?
2. Since I'm using river rocks for the bottom what live plants would do well?
3. As for tankmates... do shrimp do well or just a snail?

Thanks :3

Hello and welcome!
Sorry, don't know about Canadian websites, but my favourite types of betta are feathertails, rose tails and koi. I love the large, flowing tails of Feathertails and Rosetails and love the colours of koi.

2. It really depends on lighting, ferts, whether or not you have co2. However, the best and easiest plants IMO are anubias, java fern, java moss, baby tears (Not dwarf,) and duckweed if you're looking for floating plants.

3. It really depends on the betta, some leave shrimp alone, other have good fun with them and the shrimp don't last long. However, as I said, it really depends on the betta, how aggressive he is. If you're going to try shrimp, I recommend starting with ghost shrimp, they're cheaper and harder for bettas to track, as they're translucent.
Can I see some photos of the finished product??

1. RENA'S FISH STORE! I love kois because they can change colours over time + their pretty colours and I love plakats because they're very energetic.
2. If you just bury the roots and not rhizome, I think anubias can do very well.
3. Depends on the betta but yes. Shrimps and snails can be with a betta. For shrimps, Ammano and Ghost shrimps are recommended because they're pretty large, so a betta can't eat them. Nerite snails do well with bettas because they have short antennas, so they don't get nipped off by the betta thinking it's a worm.

Both of my bettas have happily lived with nerite snails (tiger and horned), shrimp and neon tetras. Though I will note Phantom, my crowntail was VERY aggressive when he started in a 2.5 gallon. Then got super chill when I upgraded him to a 5 gallon. So it really depends on the betta and how territorial he or she is.
I love my HalfMoon Mustard Gas Betta. I love the long flowing fins. He's like a blue/green body with pastel yellowish pink fins.
BUT on the other hand I have a Crowntail who is no serious color pattern. He has a black body and these pretty metallic fins that go between silver and pastel blue.

1. Renas Fish Store, I love koi bettas!!!!!!
3. you can try some shrimp but not all bettas like them, and snails mostly work a lot of the times

Thanks for the replies everyone. I got an orange male crowntail, and a nerite snail that died the day of (it never moved, then when I went to check on it today it fell out of its shell), and two Jungle Val plants. My phone's dead, but I'll upload some pictures of it tomorrow

Unfortunately I cannot find or buy any apple/mystery snails here, because they're an invasive species.

Cannot answer the first two questions (not from Canada and cannot for the life of me remember what kind of betta my fish is) but as far as the tank mates go it really depends on the Betta. Right now I have my betta in a 6.5 gallon tank with a female green lantern platy and two Otos. He doesn't bother the Otos too much (they're bottom swimmers so that's why) and sometimes he'll chase the platy around but I haven't had issues yet. I'd just keep an eye on any fish you do put in and have a separate tank ready in case they don't get along.

I decided on just making a planted tank slowly but surely, gonna see how well my jungle val does while propagating. Picking up a 4" mystery snail tomorrow, and I have a nerite and a betta. That should be enough

A 4 inch(?) mystery snail? It is not a mystery snail then as they only attain a size of 2 inches (around a golfball in size).

Oh well maybe her measurements are off because they certainly looked like mystery snails from the picture lol they have brown shells.

Here is my tank so far but I've removed the bright green plastic plant gonna add some more live plants.

Apple snails get that big, they are related to mystery snails, they look alike. Apple snails eat all plants though.

My favorite bettas are dragon scale bettas. I just love how they look so........ beautiful? There isn’t a way to describe it, I just love dragonscale bettas! I have one, (tap on my profile pic) and she’s lovely. I love her so much. I’ve never been so attached to a fish.

She certainly is beautiful, Betty. Just lovely.

I'm in the process of cleaning and putting my five-gallon tank back in action. My Fishy Boris Karloff died last month, and while I mourn, still I want a new fish. I did a fish-in cycle last time. This time I'm using ammonia and taking all the time in the world.

So that's TL;DR, just to say that thanks to you I think I want a dragon scale betta. In fact, I don't know if the fish I want even exists: a blue mustard gas dragon scale halfmoon plakat. Other tail types would do, just not the super fancy ones, like crown tails. If I had to, I'd drop the dragon scale, but everything else is a must, being somewhat flexible about tail types.

But back to your fish: I keep going back to look at him. Beautiful!
