Betta Spits Out Most Of His Food

Hi. My new betta spits out most of his flakes to break them down and rarely goes down to eat them again, he just leaves most of it in the ground. Does this matter? Should I try getting pellets or just feed him dried red mosquito larvae all the time (he eats all of that)?

Sounds kinda picky. Pellets are worth a try. Should give him a varied diet. Mine mostly eat pellets, but get bloodworms or mysis shrimp a couple days a week as well.

Ok. But if I don’t find pellets can he live off died red mosquito larvae?

He can't just live off of only red mosquito larve because it doesn't contain all the proper nutrients. A staple diet is important, but if he doesn't eat that. Incorporating lots of types of frozen foods can replace the staple food. Soaking all the foods he will eat with Vitachem or Nourish will also help him get all the nutrients he needs.

Maybe he doesn't like the flake texture.

TRy soaking them in water for a minute before feeding.

Bettas thrive on a varied diet. I suggest you get a variety of foods for your betta, and feed him something different every day... some pellets, maybe some frozen blood worms or brine shrimp, tubifex worms, etc... flakes are okay if your betta isn't picky, but sounds like yours is. Maybe after he eats something else he'll be more interested in flakes in the future. Be careful with freeze dried foods and pellets. They expand when they soak up water. So if you don't soak them in water before feeding, they might expand in his belly and cause him to bloat.
