Betta Rescue And Adoptions

Hello fellow betta lovers, I am starting a very small betta rescue. I plan on bringing in one betta at a time, helping it recover from any injury or disease, and then rehoming it to anyone who is able to provide a new home with a filter and plenty of love. I'll post picture updates of their progression. My current project will be this little red delta male with a nasty case of fin rot. He's an active little guy and I believe he will undergo a substantial color change as he begins to feel better. He would love a new home, and I would love to find him one.

Great project you're doing! If only every fish owner could do something like this! I will be watching this thread

I tried to do something similar a couple years ago. I posted flyers saying I would take in unwanted bettas around town(with permission). I only ended up getting one from the whole ordeal.

Are you "rescuing" these guys from pet stores or from people?

This little guy is from petco. It's generally a good store, but naturally some fish go unnoticed. If no one shows interest on this forum, I'll advertise him on ebay or something. He's a little shy and nervous now, but I'm sure he'll have a fun personality.

I have posted a couple guys and gals on here for adoption, my last two went out in January(? I have an awful memory but it was this year lol) (a small white male and a nice feather/rose petal male that was bi-color blue and orange - the rose petal was a rescue from a pet store that was closing completely, I managed to get him the last possible day and he didn't look like much, severe finrot to the point he looked like a plakat instead of a halfmoon long fin), you can list the requirements of what you are looking for each betta (can handle high flow or needs something more soothing, no tankmates, hates snails fine with cories/shrimp, etc.) and how big of a tank you feel would fit their personality (cause you will learn that pretty quick as they heal).

Whoo NC buddies!! Thanks for the interest guys!

UPDATE: I'm calling the little guy Flame. He just started his first round of Kanamycin and is still doing great! Also, shout out to Seachem's Garlic Guard for helping this little guy eat!

I'd suggest daily waterchanges before medication. Since it's finrot it should clear up well, if not faster with just water changes. Cute name.

I opted for kanamycin because he was sitting in a cup with no fins for several weeks. I've had success with medicating, so if I decide a case is severe or has been going on for a long time, I treat with antibiotics. Bettas are tough cookies. It's a different story with, say, sick corys for example, since they don't respond well to meds but I do plan on only doing only two rounds, then switching to making sure his water is pristine!

how is "my" fish doing today?

Seriously, what are you looking for in a future home? I've got a fluval spec V, heated, filtered and cycled (currently QTing some corys) was thinking of shrimp and snails but if you are willing to let him live in a 5 gal (narrow but long) tank we can talk.

I actually used to have a spec V!! until USPS broke it. Now pumpernickel the betta lives in a 10 gal. But he was pretty happy in his spec V, I think this little guy would love it, too!! but where in NC are you if you don't mind me asking? You can PM me if you don't want it posted on the forum haha.

(Sort of) Week 1 update:Here he is! His tail is starting to try to grow back, and instead of being afraid of fingers, he comes right up to nibble them and ask for food! Plus he's getting really shiny now. I think he is really cute.

What have you been feeding him and was the garlic guard short term or ongoing?

Awww look at that little guy! I was feeding him new life spectrum betta formula and some blood worms/ daphnia. And he eats without garlic guard now. He didn't want to eat when I first got him though, so I used garlic.

He flares when the dog howls...kind of funny. We have a bubble nest and he and the zebra nerite have had no issues.

Tank is steady, cycled media did the job 0/0/5. Filter pump modifications keeping the tank temp steady at 79 (was concerned the sponge baffle on the outflow would slow it down , but its all good).

The fact that he flares because of the howling is honestly the funniest thing I have heard all day! Guess he got used to my quiet room, so now he's a grouch!! and he looks so red now!

So wonderful! He looks so much better. I've been wanting to try this. There are so many non chain stores here with bettas. It's heart breaking to see them sit there.
