Betta Male or female ?

I’m having a hard time with this one...Got a koi betta and it was labeled as male. It is stressed due to being a small fish with tons to explore but water parameters are perfect. It has no egg spot but only slightly long ventral fins. Still a baby I’m sure and will grow a bit over the next couple months. But it’s just got the shape of a female. And it does flare occasionally, could be a small beard too? Let me know what you guys think from the pics!

Looks like a female, they tend to have the shorter fins from all the research I’ve done on them.

Female with a long analfin, I'd say. Also might be a veilteil? The caudal looks too asymmetrical and rounded for a plakat, but could be because she is clamping it weirdly.

If you want to be sure you can try shining a bright light from behind, then taking a good look from the front. If she is a mature female, you will be able to see the ovaries, or the lack thereof if a male (If the base colour is very dark it may be hard, I think it should just work for her though).

I don’t think she’s mature yet that’s for sure. Very tiny still. Will have a bit more to grow. I did the flash light trick as you said and I’m have a hard time finding ovaries. He/she is actually vibrant enough I can’t see through it’s color, and I turned off all other lights

I Believe it’s a female as well based on the way her face is shaped.

Thanks guys. We will see as she matures! She doesn’t seem interested in food at all but I have at least seen her poop. The male I bought just before her never did and died within 2 days hope this little koi is a trooper!

Have you tried feeding frozen foods? Every time I have issues with betta eating a nice bloodworm always seems to do the trick!

I say male, female plakats don’t often have that full of an anal or dorsal fin. Try getting it to flare at a mirror and take some more pics with the gills flared and pelvic fins down.

Also, even at a small size female will almost always have an egg spot.
