Betta Live Food Supplement

I'd like to cultivate some live food for my bettas. I know about mosquito larva, but I'm trying not to invite Zika, heh, though the larva are probably readily available here in FL. I also don't want my roommates to kill me for worsening the mosquito swarms outside.... I'm also worried about the diseases they might transmit.

Do you all have any opinions on the best supplemental worms for bettas? Or if you have a different preferred live food you find easy and nutritious?

Many thanks

Wingless fruit flies are a big hit with mine, they love mosquito larvae too. If you can hide a bucket outside, your roommates don't have to know lol. As long as you make sure they eat all the larvae, and you are not in a Zika infected area, feeding them mosquito larvae is fine.

Thanks for the input! I'm far enough north that I haven't heard of any outbreaks yet, so maybe I will hide a bucket somewhere (heheheheh).

Wingless fruitflies! Nice: those seem pretty user friendly!

No problem
I've had a couple cases in my county but they haven't been near me, thankfully. Flightless fruit flies will also work, they have wings but can't fly. A breeder I was talking to recently recommend daphnia as well.

I picked some flightless flies up from the pet store as they didnt have the wingless variety. HOW in the world do you only shake put a few? They are super bouncy.

Kel loved them! *crunchCrunchcrunch* The female bettas seem a little confused. one of them spit it back out (too wiggly?). Hehehe we'll see how this goes

someone had a few too many.

So far the most challenging part is opening the container while only letting a few out.
If I tap the top HARD several times, and shale the bottle a bit it seems to help.

The fish seem to like them!

Are they expensive and are you going to maintain a culture of them or just buy new supplies?

They are $10 from my pet store, and are supposed to last 4-6weeks.

With my current lifestyle it's less of a mess and burden to just buy them flies once a month or so. I've been feeding them flies maximum once a day. I also have frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp for them that I feed less often.

OK thanks I will look into it as I am sure they will be sold at a local pet shop that sells lots of livefood along with reptiles and amphibians as well as fish.
