Betta likes 4200k yellow spectrum light!

Yesterday, we moved our red double-tail combtail Mickey into his new 6.6g bookshelf tank. He seemed unhappy and just wanted to lay in 1 spot. To make a long story, short -- I moved the 4200k tube with the yellow spectrum peaks that had just arrived for Teddy Bear's tank into Mickey's tank and he turned into the happiest Betta around!

He's picky about his lighting, the silly fish! Apparently, if it's not peaking in the yellow, he's not happy with the lighting.

Has he been watching those decorating shows?

Maybe he thought his lighting was too dated!

Funny little guy...

Crazy. I didn't think fish would notice the spectrum of their lighting.

lol, I didn't think it would affect him like that either, but the only time he acted scared/mopey/'sick fishie' was when the fluorescent bulb with blue peaks in the spectrum was on.. he definitely could tell the spectrum difference and didn't like it. I was planning on changing the tube to a 4200k natural sunlight tube anyway, but he just accelerated that plan.

he is a total character. he loves caves and enjoys playing peek-a-boo, poking just his head out of a cave opening and looking at us.. but this thing with the light just was the height of betta pickiness.

Now this thread has me wondering how Flamebo will be in his new tank as the light has definitely a blue hue to it! The one in his current tank is a softer yellowy hue!! HHHMMMM we'll see hey!! sounds like I will be visiting the ATM again sooner than I hoped!! Poop!!

well, other than Mickey - we've had no trouble with lighting changes from yellowish to blueish.. Mickey is just a very picky Betta-boy I guess and somehow able to discern (and dislike) the difference in the light spectrum peaks. he's quite the little character, without a doubt! ;D

Well now it is your turn to have a little picky one, Dave LOL. Damon nearly drove me to distraction with all his little fishy fits over being afraid of the dark and now you have a little one who insists on a particular color of the spectrum of light. When they start to ask for the large items we may both be in trouble; but as of right now I think he sounds like the cutest little guy ever. Congratulations on a character....they do make your life interesting.

lol.. yea, and we can't be upset with the little guy. he's just too cute & loveable, even when he's being a stinker.. or should I say BECAUSE he's being a stinker.. he loves to act tough, but he also loves to act cute.

There truly is something about Red Bettas.

They are the most fun, I wonder if that is the betta equivalent to the blonde. "Blondes have more fun" well maybe "Red Bettas really do have more fun".

kind of Supposedly fish don't see color just shades of color. What is the purpose of them coloring up more brightly at spawning time if they can't see the color. so maybe they can see the color after all.
Now as for spectrum- Would that indicate a different time of day (can't remember) if it does maybe the light he likes reflects his favorite time of day.
Just curious, tried to

Fish do see in colour, especially fish who live in shallow water.

In fact, my two guys insisted on colour coordinated tanks for themselves.

I wonder too, if he just wanted the more expensive tube.
