Betta Laying On It's Side?

I've never seen him do it until today. I added a live plant for him to sit on and he was kind of in it. Like Specs was laying on his side, on top of it, with his head in the plant.
Until I added the plant his light had been off. Ever since though, he swims around fine. Is eating fine. But he'll lay on his side on the plant or, I just saw, him laying on his side but floating at the top. Sometimes he swims at like a diagonal instead of vertical. But not seeming to struggle to swim.
He's in a five gallon, heated and filtered aquarium. Set up back in march with established media and water. I just did a water change of a little less than two gallons a couple days ago. He also has two nerite snail friends. This is a new thing, he was not doing it yesterday.
To be fair, he is a Walmart Betta, which I've had since about August. So I don't have high hopes for him to live forever, but I do want him to live as long as he can.
I'll add a picture of the plant in a moment, I want to get some answers as soon as I can....

Here are some pictures of his tank.... The green plant is the one I just added... But I don't see why it would have caused this... In the first picture you can kinda see him behind the filter intake.

Hi, if he's healthy, a good shape, eating and swimming fine then he's probably just resting.
I see my betta in some quite amusing positions, he uses his fins to anchor himself against any flow and just let's the water wash over his gills I guess.
He never stays lying down in the same place for long periods and I have plenty of places he can go to get out of the flow completely.
So I'd say it's probably normal but if it still seems wrong then a video or some pics would help

I've just never seen him sit or rest like that. But as soon as I lift the hood to check on him he'll get up and swim around like nothing happened. Usually he "sits" on his bottom fin so it scared me to see him on his side. Then on his side floating behind the heater. Then floating on his side under the filter. But if I move anything he'll straight up and swim around like normal (or diagonal).
So I figured I'd post and see if maybe he was sick or old age or just him being weird. I'd rather ask a dumb question than something bad happen I could have prevented.

When he was laying on the plant, I literally thought he was dead. I couldn't see his fins or gills moving. Then I touch the hood and he swims out and looks at me. Gave me a scare.
