Betta Keeps Flaring At Me

Hi. I just got a new betta. He didn’t flare at me until he made a bubble nest and I think he got over-protective. He goes to the back of the tank and makes his gills and tail flare at me sometimes. He’s in a 20L with a heater, filter, an Indian almond leaf and plenty of hiding spots. Is there anything I can do about it?

It’s probably not flaring at you, but actually at himself. Do you have lights on the tank? It’s usually an issue with lighting and placement of the tank. Sometimes getting a piece of construction paper and putting it on the back of the tank helps. But the only thing I’ve found that works for me is turning the tank lights off.

When the lights in my room are on and the fish tank lights are on, he doesn’t flare. But if I have the lights in my room off and the fish tank light on, he flares non stop. The blue light/night light setting also gets him to stop flaring.

Ok thank you! I’ll try.

Actually I messed with the lights a bit and fed him and he seems to be doing it less.

Could it be because of my black background?

I wouldn’t think so. The color black absorbs light, so it shouldn’t have a reflection. White reflects light.

As long as he doesn't attack his reflection you should be OK, unless he really stressed by it. One of my bettas crashed into the side of the aquarium head first one day because of his reflection. Havent seen him do it since.
