Betta jumped out of her tank!

my mother's little female betta (veira) jumped out of her tank today. before i went to have a nap, she was swimming around in her tank like she always does. my father came home from work a couple hours later and couldn't find her in her tank, then noticed her on the kitchen bench (where her tank is) motionless. at first he thought she was dead, but when he touched her she squirmed around. he quickly put her back into the tank, then woke me up and told me.

we have no idea how long she was out of the water for, but he said that she was fairly dry. by this time it was around 4:30pm and stores around here close at 5:00pm, so my mother and i rushed down to petbarn to pick up api stress coat+ for her since people online were recommending it for injured fish. i dosed it accordingly to the directions and added some extra indian almond leaves into her tank. since being reintroduced into the tank, she has been lethargic and just sitting on the substrate, coming up for a gulp of air every now and then. i manged to get her to eat two of her pellets which she slowly came up for and happily ate. i haven't performed any water changes yet since i don't want to stress her out more, but i will do one if it is needed. the tank is fully planted with live plants, and after testing today her test results are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and around 10 nitrates (i did her weekly water change yesterday of around 50 percent as i was vacuuming the substrate). is there anything else i can do for her?? we are all very worried about her. i do have two other betta fish, but this one is my mother's first (i look after all the fish).

here is a picture of her in her tank before the incident for reference. her tank is a 3.6 gallon and will be upgraded to a 9.5 gallons in the near future.

From my point of view your doing a lot of the right things. Just make sure the fish has enough oxygen. With the plants and the filter the fish should be doing fine but if you want to add extra oxygen you could buy a air pump and hook it up to airline tubing with a airstone at the end.

Oh no! This does happen a lot

Don't beat yourself up, Bettas are skilled jumpers!

In regards to oxygen in the water, Bettas can do very well in poorly oxygenated water because they have a special organ allowing them to breathe surface air.
This is why they are called 'labyrinth' fish.

So, the time elapsed out of water although not good, they can survive that. Also the fact that your Betta is eating is great!

Yes upgrading to about a 10g is good. Try getting a glass lid, or go to a homedepot or what you have there. Measure the top from inside rim and get a piece of plexiglass cut. They could even cut out the room for filter and cords.

If a Betta jumps once, they are bound to jump again!

Your doing great, keep us updated!

Hope this helps

thank you! she does have a lid, however she jumped out of the little feeding hole. i currently have a small cup sitting on top of it so she can't jump again, however i think at the moment she is too weak to do that. she should be upgraded around november or so as that's when i'm upgrading all the little fish in the 9.5 gallon to a 48 gallon, so she will have the 9.5 all to herself with some snails.

She's a real beauty!!!!

You could also lower the water level a little. Other than that, she needs time to recover. Hopefully, she will bounce back to her normal, energetic sweet self!

Sending you good thoughts!!!!! :)

the first photo is how she looked when i first brought her home a month ago and the second one is a photo i took a few minutes ago. all her fins except her pectoral fins are clamped, but this morning her left one was clamped. her tail is ripped up too. should i just wait it out and keep doing the stress coat+ once a week, or is there anything else i can do? her water is a nice yellow colour now because of all the almond leaves i put in, so i'm hoping they will help too.

she has been swimming around a bit more today which is good and ate both her breakfast and dinner.
