Hey y'all! I just bought a new boy and while he's adorable and friendly, I'm a little worried about his health. He seemed to have some issues upon arrival, when he breathes, sometimes the air will get caught in little bubbles in his gills. It only happens occasionally when he surface breathes, so I figured he was just taking too big of breaths (it continued even after he had settled in, so I don't think it's caused by stress). He was a little bloated upon arrival as well but I figured it would go away. That being said, it's only gotten worse and I'm scared it's going to turn into dropsy although he isn't pineconing. I've fasted him for about a day and a half and it hasn't resolved. He also has problems with his swim bladder now where he's stuck at the surface of the tank. He has lots of surface leaves (both real and silk) to sit on so he seems fine so far, but I want to catch any issues before they become untreatable so I'm hoping someone else has experience with treating similar issues. Additionally, assuming best case scenario and this little dude just has some health problems, do you have specific recommendations for how to keep him comfortable with his issues? Thanks!

Fast him for a few days to see if that bloating goes down. Might help the swim bladder issues as well. Also feed some frozen daphnia in about 3-4 days if the bloating doesn't go down, might be constipated. If yiu don't have an airstone i would add one. May help the breathing having some water agitation

Fasting helps a ton when it comes to bloated fish. Good luck

IMO the best way to keep him comfortable while you deal with his bloat is to do a fish-in cycle with him in the big tank. 100% daily WCs would be extremely stressful for him since you have to keep removing him and he never gets a chance to fully become accustomed/comfortable in his surroundings.

I haven’t had great success with fish-in cycles but I see your point. Maybe twice daily smaller water changes? I’m in a position where it’s easy for me to do that kind of maintenance
