HI everyone,
I noticed today my betta has developed a weird small white lump on his side.I have had him since last january and I'm extremely afraid it may be a big deal. I'm hoping its only a cyst but how do I treat it? He has been acting normally and eating normally.

My betta has the same lump (infact I think it started off just like the one your betta has) and has gotten worse , I think its getting kinda whitish, tho I'm confused whether its his scales or fungus, I'm currently keeping him in check for any behavioral abnormalities, so far he is normal, with occasional scratching of the affected area on leaves
Sorry for hijacking your thread btw :'D

Hes so cute. From what i’ve been reading our little guys may be developing either a tumour, or a cyst.
I'm really hoping just a cyst! I don't know what id do without him ):

81AE0EF9-C501-44DD-87F2-9C79DC8C6950.jpeg I noticed yesterday my Betta has a white lump on his side. I posted yesterday but got no replies so I thought id try again. Is my betta going to be okay? If it is a tumour how can you tell whether or not its benign ? If it is only a cyst how can I treat him moving forward?

Anything helps, I love him so much and I don't know what id do if I wasn't able to help him ):

Tank

He lives in a 5 gallon tank
The tank has been running since last january
It does have a filter
it does have a heater
temperature is 25 degrees celsius
The tank consists of my Betta and one sterbaI corydoras (I know I will get told off for having only one when they are meant to live in groups. But the cory I bought was picked on by all of the others, enough to where he had to be kept alone in the store and I was told he is happier without them due to the trauma)

Maintenance
I change the water at least once a week, Usually twice a week.
I change half the water at a time, about 2.5 gallons
I condition their water with betta basics conditioner and I use a bacteria killer
I vacuum the substrate

*Parameters - Very Important
Yes I cycled tank
To test their water I sometimes use strips for quick checks but usually the liquid testers

Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 0.5
pH: 7-7.5

Feeding
I feed my two fish once a day alternating frozen bloodworms every other day
My betta eats about 4-5 frozen worms per feeding
I also occasionally feed freeze dried

Illness & Symptoms
I have had my betta since last january
I noticed these symptoms yesterday
His behaviour has not changed at all.

Thank you!

Could you provide a better if possible? From that one alone it almost just looks like a missing scale?

Is it possible that he might have bumped himself.....I have a Cory (female that was being harrassed by the males and not handling things well) with my Betta and they are not renowned for looking where they are going when having a scatty 5 minutes flying around the aquarium. Or perhaps bumped against decor, plastic plants, or singed himself against the heater? That sort of injury can raise scales, like a scab on a human wound

Wow thank you for your reply! I never even thought of that as a possibility. He loves sitting beside the heater and if that's what raised scales look like that could definitely be it!

Keep an eye on it, if anything changes give us an update!

You might want to buy a heater guard, they are widely available in pet stores and online. Especially if he is a heater hugger.

Okay I will do that! Is there anything I should do about the burn? How long approximately until it will fade away?

Is he better now? Mine has gotten kinda lethargic today, he was normal yesterday tho, plus his appetite sorta decreased, I mean he still eats, but not as much. I think the problem my fishy had was a cyst since it ruptured, but it did leave an open wound and I'm worried about him for that, ive added almond leaves like pagoda said, and am doing water changes every other day, I hope for the best for both our bettas

I am in desperate need of help. My little betta has been with my for 2 years and now all of a sudden he has two growths on each side and i have no vlue how they got there. I have a 5 gallon tank, a filter, water heater, a little rock cave for him to hide in. And a couple fake plants. And an Anubius water plant i brought into the aquarium a few months back. There used to be only on and was small by the back fin. But now there are two squishy lumps on his side and i have no idea what to do i cant provide photos right now but i can later. Please please help. He's so important to me

What do the lumps look like? (colour, texture, how big, etc.)

Well, the first bump is almost as large as a dime now, near the back fin, starts off whitish but still retains his purple color and the scales are torn where the lump connects to tbe body as well as being veey squishy, like jelly. The other lump is newer and has not broken any scales. No whiteness yet. I wish i could provide a photo right now. He's moving around still, having a little trouble with stability but he is moving around and comes up to eat still. Im thankful for that. But i fear one day he will stop and i want to avoid that at all cost :'(

Here he is before the bumps. It's all I have on my phone but i will take more photos when i get home

Wow, those lumps sound pretty creepy... picture would be great. At 2 years old, he's not young so it could be complications of old age or something. He's probably actually closer to three years, because they are often up to one year old by the time they are purchased. I have never heard of a disease like the one you are describing. Does anyone else know of something like this?

Well i was thinking it could be an absess. When i introduced my new anubius plant ot probably spiked the amount of nitrates i have on the water or it could have introduced a new bacteria to the environment. I really feel like it's an absess but even so, it's really scary

You could try a bacterial infection medication like Melafix or something. Research different medications for bacterial infections, and find out which is best for your situation. You probably want to go with something pretty powerful, because that looks severe.

Please do not use Melafix, it can cause issues with the bettas labyrinth organ. A better medicine for bacterial infections would be something like Furan 2.

Oh no, sorry!! I didn't know that.
It’s fine . I only learned about it recently, I think it’s not recommended to use for any labyrinth fish.

I’m not sure we can identify what it is without removing it. Some people may have guesses but I doubt that any will be correct since we would just be looking at the outside.
I really don’t think you’ll be able to treat this using any common fish med.

Usually tumors or whatever that is have to be removed on a fish. I’m just reading back through this thread and I noticed you thought your anubias caused new bacteria to be introduced? I think what’s going on with your betta is most likely a type of bacteria that was always in the water, or is a genetic issue.
