Betta has parasites - need help please

Hello, I just noticed my Betta had a very tiny worm like white parasite on his side, next to his gill. It is about 1 cm long, but very thin, like hair. Two minutes later I went back to take a picture, but it was gone. I don’t know if it retrieved into the skin. I see no evidence of parasites in the water itself or on the ground.

In Canada we can’t buy any fish medicine except through a veterinarian. The only thing I have is malachite green, which I have used a few times when he wasn’t feeling well.

The vet is closed for the week-end so I can’t call them and ask if they’ll prescribe medication for my fish, and at what price. I can call on Monday but what do I ask for ? It’s a general vet so I need the generic name.

Also, I expect it will be so expensive I won’t be able to buy it. What do I do then ? How do I get rid of this parasite ?

Thank you !

TBH, its quite difficult curing a parasite without medication, I had a betta but it never had parasitical infection, you can try aquarium salt, you can also try asking your vet for fenbendazole and see the price, I hope I could help.

This is so ridiculous. Pet stores don’t sell meds for fish and tell you to call your vet. First vet tells me to call another vet. Other vet says they can’t prescribe it because they only prescribe when they see the animal.

On Amazon they sell fenbendazole as a dog dewormer.

Roboticsbede do you know if this would this be okay and how much to dose for a fish ?

There is only one vet that can prescribe fish meds, and it’s more than 2 hours away. They want you to bring the fish in, because it’s against the law to prescribe meds to an animal without doing a consult first.

They test the water and even do a skin biopsy on the fish. After that and the 2 hour drive, if your fish is not dead, you’re lucky. And it cost you about 150$-175$ !

This is insane !

I’ve ordered fenbendazole as dog dewormer from Amazon. I don’t know why it’s possible, but I’m hoping it doesn’t get stuck at customs. That’s 50$ and I’ll have 30 x 10 gallon doses.

I’m sorry! I feel your pain. Had a similar situation last year. I contacted an emergency facility in my state that happened to have an aquatic specialist. He looked at my video and gave me some advice. They too told me to bag up the fish, too, and walking in the door under an “emergency” was $140. If I could have had a vet come here I would have paid!
Anyway if you can try to pinpoint what you think you have wrong with your fish, Amazon and eBay would have options definitely.

Hmm. They do sell fenbendazole on Amazon Canada, but it seems pretty expensive with shipping and all.

Pro-Sense (Safeguard 4) on Amazon

But I have doubts because I've never seen a Camallanus worm on the outside of a fish, and rarely in a Betta. It would have to be introduced into the tank, usually from a livebearer or cichlid. If their behavior is normal with no signs of wasting, it could be a detritus worm or something harmless.

I keep thinking about it and I have my doubts too. But fenbendazole is always good to have on hand. It’s on its way and I paid 40$ or 50$, can’t remember.

Now I think he has fin rot, so I started treating for that with aquarium salt. Maybe another post coming soon...

If it is eating, don’t underestimate medicated food flakes either. I found those effective too.

I have never used those but if there is medication in them, they won’t be available in Canada. Sigh.
