Substrate

Illness & Symptoms

since March 15 2021
How long ago did you first notice these symptoms?
Yesterday
In a few words, can you explain the symptoms?
Dropsy, pineconing scales starting protruding of stomach
Have you started any treatment for the illness?
Yes, I did a 50% water change (water doused with Seachem Stress Guard) and a epsom salt bath yesterday and added additional Indian almond leaves into the tank
Was your fish physically ill or injured upon purchase?
No, not that I was aware
How has its behavior and appearance changed, if at all?
Appearance has changed, behavior has not. She is as lively and hungry as ever, but is pineconing pretty badly. I’m so confused because she’s not lethargic at all (my last betta also had dropsy and he was lethargic when he was pineconing and could barely swim)

Explain your emergency situation in detail.
(Please give a clear explanation of what is going on, include details from the beginning of the illness leading up to now)
I noticed yesterday when I arrived home from school that my betta fish’s scales were slightly standing up. My previous betta suffered from dropsy as well, so this was a regular thing I now checked with this betta. After panicking, I did a 50% water change and performed an epsom salt bath on her. Based on a tutorial I watched I put her in a 2G I have with 2 tbsp of dissolved epsom salt for 8 minutes, then into a glass fish bowl I had (I’d assume 0.3 G) with 1/4 of the salt water and 3/4 tank water for 3 minutes. After, I transferred her back to her cup to return to her tank. (All containers had the same water temp). I also added two indian almond leaves to her water (I usually add one)

I don’t know how this happened, she has been fine since I’ve gotten her, no health issues whatsoever. I went on vacation for 5 days and a neighbor fed her her usual routine on the third day, and I fed her right before I left, and right when I got back (on the 1st and 5th days). Prior to this, I did a large 50% water change and scrubbed the inside of the tank with an aquarium brush. When I returned home she seemed normal, but with the onset of school I didn’t clean her tank for three weeks (I skipped two weeks because of the hectic schedule from the beginning of school). Immediately yesterday, I cleaned it. My other betta was sick because I didn’t clean his tank for longer periods of time due to personal issues. This is the only thing that I can think of.

I plan to go to my LFS tomorrow and get kanaplex. Please help, I don’t know what else to do because I don’t want to lose another fish.

it looks like you are doing all you can. I would definitely continue with daily epson salt baths though and keep really clean water. best of luck though I really hope she makes it!

Poor girl :( I recently lost two of my bettas to dropsy too.

I've heard that kanaplex and epsom salt baths are the way to go. Here's a link of someone who cured dropsy. Hope this helps! Keep me updated on her progress

She looks worse today :( like a pufferfish. I just picked up the kanaplex so fingers crossed. I’m assuming I should remove the carbon from her filter while dosing. Should I just add the kanaplex to her new water? (I do her water change while she’s sitting in the salt bath)

Yes remove the carbon filtration, or cartridge, or whatever you have in your filter. You can try to soak that in some tank water that you put aside to try to save some of the beneficial bacteria. The med will probably kill off a lot of the beneficial bacteria in your tank that you are dosing, so you will have to really stay on top of your water changes.

And yes, put the kanaplex into her tank water.

Again, sending positive thoughts your way!!!!
