Betta Has A White Chin

Hi,

I have a Betta who has recently moved to his new yesterday afternoon. Did a fish in cycle with tetra start after 24hrs as his old tank had a slight crack in it and I was worried it might crack one day whilst I’m out (Not ideal I know). I haven’t tested the water yet as with Tetra the readings in the first 7-10 days will be all over the place, but will keep a close eye on ammonium levels after 48hrs.

I can see a bit of a white chin near his gills (a few s attached) and wanted to know if I should be concerned? Should I take him to the pet store to hold for a few weeks whilst I cycle the tank or just carry on and let the tetra start do it’s job?

Any advice on the whit chin would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sure that you're betta appreciates the upgrade. That White Spot seems to be common amongst bettas, several of mine have it too I do not think it's anything to worry about. I would just watch it and make sure it doesn't spread or become fuzzy or patchy in some way to where it looks more like an infection rather than just a color change

The tank looks beautiful however the betta doesn’t look very happy. I understand this was a emergency movement but I would be keeping a really close eye on the water quality. His tail is very clamped. Colour loss could be from stress. White spot is usually all over the fish not just condensed in one spot and you should de able to see the separate grains. It could also just be that the fish is changing colour and nothing to worry about however I would keep a close eye on water and test it regularly and make sure betta doesn’t seem to get sick

I think I can see a little bit of white spot on your betta when I look closely. As long as you don’t have inverts in the tank you can treat with most medication. Just remember to keep an eye on water as you dose these chemicals

Thanks for your replies!

I’ll wait 2 more days to see how he gets on before looking into water changes/treatment. I might add another dose of tetra safe to pre-empt a possible ammonium build up and keep his stress levels as low as possible.

Hi,

I have one more question, more of a speculative one. The new tank is 22litres and was wondering whether I could add 2 small black mollies in a few months (once it’s fully established) as it’s looking a little empty.

I would have to check how my Betta reacts before deciding to keep them, but you think this is feasible with the tank capacity? The pet shop says it’s fine as the mollies are really dark and there is enough room, but would the mollies have enough space to thrive as well as the Betta?

Any thoughts/suggestions would be really appreciated.

I would never do mollies and bettas. Some people have them in communities but mollies can be (not usually) aggressive and most of the slimmer types (eg not balloon) will be way to active and outcompete and generally annoy the betta. They tend to prefer slower and smaller tankmates. However that’s besides the point as I would never put a Molly in 22 litre tank. It is completely unsuitable for them, they can actually get pretty big! And obviously they breed loads and all of a sudden you ed up overstocked with bad water quality. Just keep your betta and look for better tank mates for the future. I would recommend you to either buy a reliable book of fish and requirements ( I have one for saltwater it’s really good) and take it into the shop so when you are interested in a fish they can tell you whether it’s syitable. I wouldn’t trust a shop that recommended mollies for a 22 litre tank good luck searching to find the best tank mates, if you have any more questions please do ask
