10 Gallon Tank Betta growing huge lump in abdomen

catapples

I'm currently away from college and couldn't bring my Betta with me so she's been taken care of by my mom who has been doing a good job (weekly water changes etc). over the last few months she has been growing a lump in her abdomen. it looks like she is not swimming quite like normal but is still energetic and eating. any ideas what the lump is and what i can do?

Demeter

Likely a tumor, as bettas are prone to them. Short of sticking a needle in it to see if you can drain fluid, not much to be done.

Lowering the water level, reducing water flow and having plenty of resting spots near the surface will keep her more comfortable.

Sometimes growths will rupture, the body will push out the growth and then heal up. I’ve had it happen a few times in betta and gourami. Keep the water extra clean if the growth ruptures and see if she recovers. If you see more lethargic behavior, pale coloration, refusal to eat and all the scales are pine coned out, she should be euthanized.
