Betta Glass Surfing??

My betta that I've have for about 2 months just got put into his new cycled 10 gallon aquarium and won't stop glass surfing! He was in a 5 gallon before and he rarely ever did it and I also never had any backgrounds for the tank. He was put in the 10 gallon about a week ago and whenever I walk into my bedroom he is usually darting across the front or the side of the tank. I put a black background on the back side and one side of the tank where he is always swimming... I have a few small crypts, 5 or 6 dwarf sags in the tank as well as two anubius'. I also have a pretty big piece of driftwood and two other decorations to fill the tank. He is very healthy and eats fine but I don't know what to do about the glass surfing?? Is there anything I can do or should I just leave him be?

How long has he been in the new 10 gallon? It sounds as if he is just acclimating to his new tank.

How long has he been in the tank? It's taken my males up to a week to stop nosing at the glass before. It's pretty typical behavior. I really wouldnt worry about it unless he starts exhibiting signs of stress.

I moved my first betta from a five to a ten and he was all over that tank for quite a while. He didn't appear stressed, although he would occasionally flare at his reflection. Hopefully he'll settle down soon.

That sounds like a good idea. My crowntail glass-surfed on-and-off for almost month before he settled down. Might have been too excited to get out of the pet store cup. Bettas can be finicky like that!

Maybe you can put a small decoration from the old tank into the new one so the betta has something familiar to look at? When I'm rearranging the tank setup or doing a big water change, I'll put my crowntail in a small temporary container with a small quartz pebble he seems to have "adopted". When the pebble is in the temp container, he'll sort of hover around it and "guard" the pebble rather than doing laps around the container.

I think as long as there's somewhere/something in the new tank that your betta can hide at and feel secure in, he'll figure out the dimensions of the tank himself and settle down just fine.
